Can't be many mechanics using a speed brace Do socket sets still have them in?

I was brought up with them .
You get a good feel through them .
That one is 3/8 drive snap on .
Built many race engines with it .
I have promised t to one of the lads at work when i retire , He has been using it a fair bit .
Good for sump bolts and the like .

From my time in Agri/Plant. Crossland, Fram, and Wix should be avoided. poor quality, and the filter medium is not as good as it should be.

Mahle (Knecht), Mann, Purflux, Filtron, Coopers, and of course genuine OE are the ones to have.

I still use a 1/4” speed brace a lot , often with a 1/4” to 3/8” adapter for a lot of stuff. I still have a 3/8” drive somewhere? The last time I used a 1/2” was to refit the engine in my MG Midget 40 odd years ago , put it between the engine lifting eyes as a sort of load leveller allowing me to tilt the engine

I use the speed brace from my 1/2" Draper set when changing spark plugs. Find it ideal for the job to just nip them up.

Fuel filters I use in my Freelander are sold as Coopers / Fram but they are actually made by Purflux Sogefi. Same with those labelled Bosch, take off the Bosch sticker and...

Bosch were not selling filters back then, so they are a bit of an unknown quantity, but I do believe a lot their stuff now is an exercise in badge engineering, plus there is a LOT of Bosch counterfeit stuff out there. Mind you, there is a lot of counterfeit just about everything around now, as I am sure you are well aware.

Customers used to love Fram/Crossland/Wix filters because they lasted longer, i.e. didn't block up as quickly. Especially diesel fuel filters. Just no.

How many car makers actually make their own filters? The whole OE thing has become a minefield now. I can't find exactly who are the OE manufacturers these days. The one for my Audi, when bought from the main dealer, is labelled as being Audi, but it's impossible to know who makes them for Audi. An exercise in forcing people to buy overpriced dealer parts with the threat of turning down any warranty claims if one dare to stray from buying parts from them. Of course, I'm not going there for the sake of 23 quid, but 23 quid for an oil filter is daylight robbery. I would love to see a definitive list of who makes what, for whom. Audi "genuine" brake pads are over 200 quid and we all know Audi don't make brake pads, they will be some OEM like Brembo, Teves, etc, but I have no idea who.

I dislike ECP badly, they’ve done to the motor factor industry that Stagecoach did to the public transport system, went in with low prices and undercut everyone until there wasn’t much competition then increased their prices selling their cheap ***** parts for an over inflated price.
Ironically I only tend to use them now to buy things like oil/air filters but stick to Mann/Mahle brands because they are the OE manufacturers for BMW which is what I drive.
ECP suspension components I’ve found will last about a year if you’re lucky, I’m already having to change parts for a second time after less than 10,000 miles.
Never again.

But where to go? I really dislike ECP and avoid them unless it's sunday afternoon, the car is in bits, and I need something desperately. Mostly, my planning avoids those situations but it is really hard to know who is good and who needs to be avoided like the plague.

e.g. AutoDoc. Any good? I have no experience of them and a bit reticent to try an unknown quantity. eBay, yeah full of counterfeit stuff so I don't go there. Halfords? Well, sometimes perhaps. Not cheap though. OK for engine oil on a trade card, but there is another minefield. eBay selling 20 litre drums of allegedly "this brand" of oil, but there is even counterfeit Castrol now.

My point is, which are the decent auto factors these days?

Aye exactly, I’ve a couple of suppliers which I trust from eBay, have used auto doc a couple of times, first time they sent the wrong part and it took 6 weeks to get refunded, the parts come from Berlin but their prices are very competitive.
Recently I’ve been going to the main dealers if I need something quickly, yes they’ll take your pants down but at least it’s fit and forget, not fit and do it again a year down the line though I try to plan jobs in advance now and order good quality stuff before doing the job.

1.6 Hdi has a recessed drain plug which means you can never get all the old oil out. I've read about using a bolt and big socket to pull them out level to cure the design fault.

I have family in Northern Europe and they buy a lot from Autodoc (Germany), there's often a range of suppliers / prices for a part, I was advised to pick one of the mid-priced items (too cheap = junk, expensive = why pay more than you need to).

They are not quick, often several days to pick the order before it even leaves their warehouse, fine if you are bulk ordering stuff for a slow moving project.
You need search to see about any delays or customs charges getting stuff delivered to UK, I've not ordered anything recently.

I find autopieces24 (autodoc), are amazing, a standard letter in France takes 3 days, I've had autodoc stuff delivered in 48 hours generally.

I use Ford or MANN oil filters in our Kuga (PSA D10WC engine).

Last time I left the O ring alone as it looked in excellent condition. A wipe of oil round it normally does the job.

Always just nip it up with the proper spanner (worth it's weight in gold!).
