Peugeot Partner van oil filter seal failure

Was servicing my brothers van on Saturday: 2016 Partner with a sohc 1.6 diesel. Brother returned today with an oil leak from the filter.

I have serviced cars for 40 plus years and never had a failure before, though most were the traditional steel cannister spin on filters.

The pug uses a plastic housing with a paper filter, the new square section seal on the housing was checked it was not twisted and liberally oiled, the housing lid is awkward due to being partially obscured by hoses and cables. it did feel a bit tight the last few turns.

On strip down the square seal was cut through!

Lucky I still had the old seal so refitted it with extra care, did seem to screw together easier.

The filter was from Euro Car Parks, Croslands.

Not sure if I am losing the plot, my first ever oil filter seal failure, trying to decide if cheap parts, me not paying attention or bad luck?

ive had issues before with poor quality aftermarket. i am more picky about brands for that stuff now, and have had no issues.

Is the plastic body thing the problem ? I had them on my Volvo, and now my Freelander, never had any issues with the Volvo, not done the Freelander yet, but it looks a bit mullered.

We’ve had a couple of them seals split when using cross land filters. We tend to avoid crosland on the 1.6 Peugeots now

Aye, did my dad's TD4 Freelander at least half a dozen times without issue.

Interesting, I usually try and get OEM branded or Mahle.

I was worried about the Volvo one...was on very tight but with the correct tool it came off fine.

Plastic housings just feel wrong to me!

Ecp are really hit and miss I find.

there a bloody nightmare done mine twice and my ass was nipping pipes everywhere and oil all over when you unscrew it being upside down

Unfortunately you don't get to choose!

Used these style of filters multiple times never once had an issue with the seal.

Crosland used to be good filters now they are just a brand name .
I won't use them .

Can't be many mechanics using a speed brace Do socket sets still have them in?

These DV6 engines - access to oil filter is poor.

Square seals OK - if you spray them with silicon lube before assembly.



Only failures we have had in house - is when one of us have put seal in the wrong groove in the plastic housing and torn it going in.

Seal groove has let outs in it - other groove that looks like the seal groove is the top of the thread and when you do it up - the lead in of the plastic thead cuts thru the sq profile seal.

I always use one to run down cylinder head bolt's. It's easy to feel if one is tight on the thread and needs investigating.
