Peugeot 208D engine squeak/rattle???

Any Peugeot 208 experience in here?

Our 208 has developed an engine noise , sort of squeak/rattling, most noticeable at tick over. Sounds to be in area of alternator/ drive belt idler (ish) , difficult to determine exactly.
Tried the wood stick sounding method against various areas, getting the usual steady bearing rumble vibrations but nothing matching the squeak/rattle.
Tried squirting everything visible with wd40 to try isolate it but no joy.

Is there a common “oh yes, it’s the …..thing - known for it with them engines” ???

Does depressing the clutch stop the noise? If yes, it might be the clutch/gearbox rattling.

There's talk of the turbo bearings on several forums.

Check that the air intake tubing mounts are sound.

Does wiggling the exhaust tailpipe, or pushing it to one side or the other, affect the noise?

Is worse at idle?

Probably the alternator clutch pulley starting to fail, if its got one fitted. If it has, take the belt off, stick a finger in the alternator to James the rotor and try turning the pulley in both directions. It should lock up in the normal drive rotation, and spin in the opposite direction. If it feels springy as it locks up, or doesn't spin (wont spin freely, but shouldnt take much effort to move) in the opposite direction, it needs replaced.

You can tell if it's got a clutch pulley by looking at the front of the pulley. A standard pulley will simply be a relatively hollow pulley with the mounting nut recessed in the centre. A clutch pulley will look pretty much like a solid block, and usually have a plastic cover over it to help keep dirt away from the clutch/bearings.

And that is the pulley on the end of the crank that drives the the main ribbed belt??

That's the one. Look for signs of metal or rubber dust around it, particularly around the slots on the face of it. It's usually more noticeable during starting & stopping the car.
Look at the sprung idler on the belt when the engine is running - if its bouncing a lot that could be a sign the pulley is on the way out. Not a cheap item to replace but its worth buying a decent brand if you want it to last.

But don't worry, you'll know when its going to fail completely, the noise will be horrendous.
