Petrol Strimmer Recommendation ?

I have the 4stroke Stihl combi, hedgetrimmer, chainsaw, strimmer and also bladetrimmer. Also have an extension, so can reach quite high.
Like it a lot but because of the noise migth add Electric engine.
4 stroke without oilsump, oil is in the motomix.
They also do a broom which looks goed...

Husqvarna fit a blade to them and they will cut scrub down very easily. The only time you need to stop is to refuel

I've got about a 60 square metre area that needs thick grass and brambles cut every season. Don't want to hire someone to do it again, so plan to do it myself, and to my satisfaction. I had a Kawasaki strimmer which was 100% reliable. It kept going strong with only the worn strimmer head replaced a few times over the 30 years I had it; now I wish I had brought here to the UK.

Would appreciate knowing what brand and model of straight shaft strimmer would be a good choice, and at a reasonable price ?

Do you mean 60 square meters or 60 meters square. Makes a big difference as to your requirements.

I could cut down 5 inch diameter trees with mine, took time but could do it. Smaller trees it ate up, the blade I used was very like a circular saw blade.

I would prefer to go with a 2 stroke model.

Here are two of my string trimmers, a Swisher push-type string trimmer and a 2-stroke Husqvarna hand-held model. I also have a Craftsman model (not shown), which a neighbor found in the "good" pile at the local trash transfer station. My 4-stroke Ryobi strimmer gave up the ghost about four years ago, and it wasn't worth the cost of new parts to fix it, so I bought the Husqvarna model you see in the photo. It's been working great. If you follow the simple startup sequence it starts perfectly every time, and the string is fairly easy to load on the spool. The Swisher is quite well built, but I use the Husqvarna about five times more often than the Swisher. However, both of these got a good workout today. Between our place in Brunswick and our other property where we are restoring an old house, we have about 43 acres, with a lot of grass, weeds, brush, and trees to deal with, so most of my outdoor tools get heavy usage, including four chainsaws and a variety of other equipment designed to curtail the growth of vegetation. Anyway, I really like the Husqvarna strimmer, so I guess that's my recommendation.

By the way, the Husqvarna shaft is quite a bit longer than it looks in this photo.

And what I learned only recently (two years and several anoying rolls of wire too late) is that the cutting wire and nylon blades need to be stored under water.

I never bother dumping fuel from anything, nor do I throw away last years petrol. The only thing I do is to put additive in my bulk diesel tank with each new fill. 3300 litres of gone off diesel would be slightly hard to lose on a bonfire.

On big 'proper' strimmers like these, does bumping the head to dispense more string work better than the cheapies? Assuming that's even how they work, I'm guessing buying good string (line, whatever its called) is important too?

I've only ever used cheap crap ones, my nan will spot one for a tenner, buy it forgetting she never uses the last one she bought and then give me the old one. I then use it once and chuck it in the bin because getting it to feed the line out properly is more trouble than it's worth.

You can't use a blade on a bent shaft trimmer.
You will need a shrub cutter that has a straight shaft.

Amazingly yes, and my Stihl also doesn't twist the grass around the bottom bearing like my McCullough used to do.

Your sickle-bar setup definitely appears to be heavy-duty. It looks like you did a really nice job putting that together! I suspect that your application might differ somewhat from mine, however. I use a string trimmer mostly for getting into tight spaces, trimming right up against/around/between things like rough foundation stones, fence posts, pipes, tree trunks, patio tiles, stairs, garden borders, between garden rows, edging sidewalks, etc. I have a six-foot sickle bar pto-driven mower that was good for mowing our fields, but after the main casting broke I was going to repair it, but I happened to get a good deal on a five-foot rotary cutter, which works well on our rather undulating fields and cuts quite heavy woody brush and saplings.

There a slightly bigger version of that in my beat at the moment. It’s clearing twenty year old larch trees with ease. The larch are diseased ( phytophthora ramorum)
