My mate recently put petrol in his escort van. Same thing, a few miles later it dies. Realizing what he's done, drains the tank, refuels but it still runs very rough.
After talking to numerous mechanics (he's in the trade himself) he got passed onto a guy who is a bit of a diesel guru. He reckons the pump (if it's electrical not mechanical) has a sensor that uses light to measure something or other and when the petrol gets into the system it needs resetting (can you tell i don't know what i'm talking about ).
Anyway he did all this analysis down the phone to narrow down which bits of equipment to take round his house, today i think so i'll let you know if it cures things.

petrol in diesel

Some diesel cars can run on a vegetable oil/diesel mix as much as 50/50. My mate ran his bedford midi on 50/50 mix with no problems. I heard the Lucas diesel pumps cant cope with the mixing of veg oil an diesel and can do the pump in.

I have been running my 306 with a lucas pump on a mix of 60% diesel and 40% veg oil for about 3 years now and it has never missed a beat,you just need to change the diesel filter a bit more often.

I also did the petrol in the diesel thing a few years ago,i put about a gallon of petrol in before i realised,i just filled the tank with diesel(i could aford to then lol)and all was fine

I know F all about cars so forgive me if I am talking out of my **** :full, but wasn't that a reccomended practice anyway in the early days of diesels, put a gallon of petrol in the mix, during the winter to help stop it freezing??

I know when my cousin accidentally put a few gallons of diesel in his Hillman imp, then realized what hed done. He rang his mechanic mate who told him to "cover it with 2 star to the brim" then when it was all used he de-coked the engine and it was fine.

Yes !!

In ice or snow some truck drivers used to alter the exhaust to blow over the tank. If the truck had been standing for a few hrs, oily rags were set on fire under tank, fuel pipes & sump.

Remember a bloke scooping a shallow trench in ice under the tank pouring fuel in setting light & coming into the fitting shop for a brew, 15 mins later F***ng big bang followed by rumble, all rush out to find truck tilted to one side & 10 ton of steel pipes rolled on top of 2 parked cars (empty). The fire had melted the ice, burning fuel had flowed to the offside rear wheels the tyres exploded, back end dropped ropes snaped & load fell.

Dont know how he explaned that one.

Now they remove the wax & make plastics from it.

I'm no derv expert.Wouldn't worry about it.

I do own a rover 620SDLi.Now it is warm it is running straight veg oil from asda.I can do that cuz of the pump being made by engineers(bousch)and it being mechanical.

As someone mentioned the type of pump makes a differance.Worth finding out.

my mg zs diesel and both TDI discos run a 30% cooking oil/ derv mix.

up to 50% in warm weather, down to !0% in very cold.

been ok for the last few years.

the adding of petrol to dervs is a bigger problem than derv in a petrol (they just smoke) mate of mine runs his car on the mixture he takes from customers cars, he leaves it to settle and pours the petrol off the top into her petrol car and the bottom derv into his diesel landrover.

I put about 20 litres of optimax in my transit once. soon as i realised, I filled it the rest of the way with deisel and you know what? didn't notice anything different. ...but then, i never noticed any whining/grinding till my gearbox blew up and ground to hault on a roundabout

I used to have a 2.4 derv range rover classic that i always used to put the mixed fuel in. She used to smoke a bit but ran like a train. Come to think about it i put a mix of engin oil and derv through it once... seemed o.k! Wouldnt do it with the disco but the range pig seemed to handle it fine

Hello Simon, as a retired engineer I reckon Aeros advice is sound enough, in fact that is what I would do if a friend made the same unforgivable? mistake you did. Diesels do not like petrol being dumped in them, the seals in the pump and the fact that they are very high compression engines does not bode well when it comes to reliability. However be warned it will smoke for a while, and do not stress the engine until the fuel is all used up as over revving with excess oil is almost as bad as the excess petrol. I do not know but the pump in those cars may be made by Bosch which are a lot more forgiving than Lucas, C.A.V types. I hope this helps, Bob.

Hehe, I feel I should explain my reason for for resurrecting this thread guys and gals, it all started when someone posted a spam reply advertising some gadget to stop you sticking the wrong pump nozzle in your filler. I posted my specsavers reply then Malcolm or a moderator deleted the spam post which left mine and as mine is sort of relevant to the thread, we're off again.
Some great advice though even if it is a bit late for Simon.
