I think we're all old enough to have seen many recessions, and even more governments and if that experience has taught us anything it's that any improvement in our individual circumstances will come from a combination of luck and work. Anyone thinking the powers that be (of any persuasion, anywhere in the world) will make things better for you/us is stretching optimism into foolishness.

That's most definitely not a political opinion, I mention it only to reinforce the point that there's no benefit in stressing over things which are beyond your control. All any of us can do is to focus our time and energy on the things we have influence over, and move them towards making ourselves and our loved ones as happy as possible.

Remember most electricity was produced by coal fired power stations then, not reliant on gas like now. If it happens again I’m not sure how many younger people would cope, seems only oldies have candles, stockpiles of tinned food, a camping stove and the resilience to handle adversity.

This is definitely a thing to remember. A mate of mine often comes across as quite depressed when sharing stuff on FB about a thousand things that don't affect him directly, and he can't do anything about even if they did. It's nice to be aware of things, sure, but not if they're going to affect him so much.

I have met some incredibly resilient young people recently, through Andy's Man Club and work/business events and I have been pleasantly surprised

There are plenty of old(er) folk out there who would struggle from what I have seen

I am the very definition of middle aged btw, so all bets are off!

I think now we'd all struggle TBH. Imagine the chaos it'd cause to any/all of us if just the internet and mobile phones went down? An emergency wind up radio and candles wouldn't be much help there.

Without the internet I would not be able to work. I have 2 independent broadbands...so if one goes down I can use the other.

There have been times where both were broken .

Starlink and an EV would probably be a good idea for me just as a backup for work.

Brent Crude just dropped to around 88$ per barrel. Thats from a high of 110. Normal before this was around 62. The prices at the pumps shot up when this started and closely mirrored every rise, but not every fall. When do we expect a drop at the pumps as significant as the drop today?

I asked the question on this very post and was told they didn't shoot up and will come down quickly

I can too, thought I’d only be a school for a couple off days each week and get to play the rest of the time. Mum was a teacher and gave us home lessons !

Out here in the sticks power cuts are fairly common so we're used to needing a 'plan B'. I lived in cities for most of my 20s and can only remember one, that was quite scary - loads of people milling about on the streets when it happened, and you couldn't see anyone until you crashed into them. A pickpocket's paradise I would have thought.
