Petrol/Diesel prices near you

Most filling stations near me are around the 142 mark for diesel. I had to go to the Shropshire/Wales border yesterday and the further North I went from Birmingham the higher the prices went, 156 was the highest I saw on the A5.

Filled up this morning, the first station I passed (Esso) was 150, the next one which is one of the two I normally fill up at (Texaco) was 140. The cheapest around here is on the bypass by Branson's Cross (Murco) and that's 136 but I rarely fill up there as it's on my way home and always busy. By the time I'm heading home I've usually used up all my tolerance for the great unwashed.

The whole panic buying thing is an interesting phenomenon.
On the news (French), yesterday evening they were saying that
France has 900 +/- days of fuel reserves, stored here in country.
IMO, that's quite a decent cushion. Yet, we see pump prices
immediately on the rise and, quite predictably, queues at the
pumps.
I'm presuming that the rush to the pump is motivated not by
a fear that the fuel will run out, but that it's going to cost a bit
more to fill one's tank.
Fortunately, I'm rather cushioned by this, transport strikes,
random acts of inconvenience, by having 3000 litre tank and
pump at home :thumbup:

A left over from when I had the business, but I just kept this
habit going. Gives me about six months autonomy these days,
depending on how often the daughters come to visit.
As sheer luck would have it, I just filled the tanks a couple of
weeks ago.... :thumbup:

I think my most economical car is my Caterham - everything else does somewhere between 12 and 24 mpg. Might soon be a good time to buy another gas guzzler

I’m interested to hear people’s actual experiences with storing fuel - I’d heard that petrol goes stale fairly quickly - I did have a generator with 6 years old petrol in it and it stank awful. So at which point does petrol and diesel will no longer function in a car ?

I use that one if I happen to be passing and Mrs Robo will get to it via the country lanes from the stables and come in from Beoley.

In my experience old petrol in a fuel injected vehicle will do less damage than ones with a carburettor, I suppose the fuel injection system has no air in it but carbs are vented and suffer badly.
1 year did this to my bike.

Diesel I think lasts much longer unless I put it in my truck...

If your storing diesel, get the biocide added or it goes off and can block filters etc.

It's certainly an issue for those with boats, camping cars, back-up gennies, et al.
That is, fuel stored, not used, for extended periods. I'm not sure of the time frame.
Known as Diesel Bug, it does cause havoc with blockages.
It's not an issue personally, as the turnover, albeit slower these days, is still
sufficiently regular (6 months +/-).
I believe, however, that once the bug has installed itself, it can be a devil to
eradicate. My knowledge isn't great on the subject, though. Maybe someone
else on here could expand ?

If you can pick you moment it's worth it, but as it's on the way home the three or four pence a litre isn't worth the hassle. The most I'll get in the van on a fill up is 75 litres and it's rare I run that low, so I'd save a maximum of £3:00 on a tank, and as I mostly use the bike I reckon a fill up once a month is the norm, occasionally once a fortnight. So average every three weeks would give me about £52:00 a year saving at the 4p difference.

The diesel bacteria grows on ithe nterface between water and diesel.

Best to treat it in a boat, if unused over winter.

Resembles coffee grains.

In 25 years with working with boats I've encountered it a handful of times.

Usually blocks the prefilter is the first way you know.

I had the diesel bug in the Unimog. Had to strip everything except the injection pump to get rid of it, but it had not been used for a long time (five years) and I believe it is only a problem if you have water (condensation) in the tank. One reason why fuel tanks are made of plastic, they are less prone to condensation.

As for petrol, I store it for the chainsaws. mowers, and generator, but only about ten litres at a time. I leave fuel in the Honda mowers over winter and never had a problem starting them come the spring, but then they are Honda. Good luck with a Briggs and Stratton :laughing:

Any petrol vehicle with a tank vent is going to suffer a bit, but from my experience, I wouldn't want to store it for more than about a year, provided the container is sealed

132.9 for premium diesel at Costco yesterday. It's already gone silly with people filling containers up at the same time, spilt diesel everywhere and of course huge queues.

That station on the bypass was 136 when I passed at half five this morning, it was 137.9 when I went past half an hour ago. :dontknow:

The BP garage has gone to 144.9 for diesel, even ASDA jumped to 140.9 today.

Unless you’re driving something for the 80’s or earlier I’ll wager you’d be in the same boat in a petrol or diesel car. And of course the pumps in the fuel station probably wouldn’t be working… :whistle:

Since E10 came in, I've been using Stabil, Stabil Marine and Briggs&Stratton's own label stabilisers.
Never had a problem starting anything so far.

I bung the right ratio of Briggs & Stratton fuel saver ( on line in 5 litre containers ) in each jerry can of petrol . adding two stroke oil at 25 to 1 either to 22 litres or a litre at a time as required. Fuel in the genny is two years old and it starts straight away .. though I do turn the fuel off and let the genny run no load till it stops , so no fuel is left in the carb to evaporate and go gummy .
