Peterborough to M25/M4 junction

Morning all, I've to travel to the above location for a course at Lakeside Energy Recovery Facility and was hoping to avoid the worst of the traffic. Google Maps Directions says to go A1/A421/M1/M25 whereas I'd have skipped the A421/M1 bit and stuck on the A1 at taken the North Orbital past St Albans (cuts the corner by South Mimms). Can any more regular travellers offer any tips/advice as to the best of these routes to take, evn if it's 'both'll be crap, del with it!'
We've to be there by 10:00 a.m. if that makes a difference.

Good luck, I have traveled from Essex to West London many times the M25 from the M1 around to the M4 can take well over an hour+.

My best advice would have been to book a hotel and travel down last night, or leave very early and stop for breakfast near your destination.


I'm glad I now live further north. I certianly don't miss the M25 free car park, or the other London traffic at all.

If I ever had to travel to somewhere inside the M25 I'd go early and stop near where I was working for a cuppa.

Not going to be nice at all. That's a pig of a spot, there isn't really an easy way round it. Have a play with google maps and see what it suggests, they use historic live traffic data to aid with predictions.

Amazingly easy run through, set off at 07:00, ran into our first traffic on the Fletton Parkway approx. 3-4 miles from work (low-speed shunt but 3 lanes down to 1 lane due to vehicle positioning). Second delay a few miles after Huntingdon going South, looked like someone had driven off the road into treeline and was being recovered when we passed. M25 was blessedly unaffected and we reached the Lakeside Education Centre at 09:30. The run back was even easier, which must mean the traffic karma gremlins are going to throw me a blinder of a tailback next time I have to go down there! You were lucky there!
I reckon there was a smash further back around the M25 leaving lighter traffic.
I listen out for that on the radio then skip that junction for the one after the accident.
POXY bit of road made worse by the speed traps that now operate around that part.
I hope you didn't speed through a sudden change of limit down to 40,50 or 60 as that's where the camera's live! That are set VERY close to the limit and often come on when there's a completely clear road.....
Cough "revenue" cough "collecting" cough cough....
Mind you if you set one off you'd know as they'd even cause Stevie Wonder to blink if he was looking at them!

I was crapping it a bit about the cameras, as I realised I had the cruise control set at 75 through some of the national speed limit applies sections, but I didn't see any Close Encounters Of The Third Kind-brightness light flashes so I hope I was OK.

I'm pretty sure it's 79 to trip them at national on the M25, ACPO guidelines.

75mph seems to be ok as long as the signs are off.
It's when the red 40,50,60 signs light up you have to stamp on the brakes.
I've seen someone get flashed doing the same speed as me (60) as he went through the sensor it changed to 50, he got flashed I stampped on the brakes with an artic up my ****! I didn't get flashed but did nearly get killed by a 40ton truck.
Very safe isn't it Mr Cameron? Oh sorry I just remembered you wouldn't ever be driving on the M25! Flying over it maybe. £££££££££££££ more £££££££££££££
