Hopefully it's just a puppy thing. When I was a kid they couldn't even treat Parvo.

Don't sucked into buying all this expensive dog food. Our dogs have dried food, £8 a sack.Our Patterdale X is 14 and looks like she may outlive us all,Lurcher has the same food and he's in mint condition.

If it's parvo, get back intouch with the breeder. They will need to be told, so they can contact others that have bought pups. I do hope it's not parvo. Not a nice start to having a new pup.

He's with the vets, they want to put an IV of fluids in, give him pro biotic foot to replace the bacteria in the stomach he'll have lost with the diahorreah, and run tests for Parvo virus, then if he doesn't perk up keep him in over night, if it turns out he has the virus they will have to start an aggressive course of treatment and he'll be in for 2-3 days/nights! PetPlan have a 2 week no claim time frame at the start of any new policy so looks like the piggy bank is going get battered.

Basically I've gone and stitched myself up good and proper with this one. Pass me my beer...

I though of that, first thing out of the vets I told him the pup was sick and asked if the others were ok. He said they are all ok, he only had two of the 5 left now and they were both fine, that the one he sold first (2weeks ago) was doing fine according to the new owner and that the dogs all went through their vet check a week ago. So dead end there.

chewing grass to make themselves retch is often a sign of worm infestation,touch wood for the dogs sake its not parvo. at least you have done the right thing by the dog and taken it to the vet.fingers crossed it will be ok.

Short and sweet seems to be the key, he looses interest and starts eating grass or leaves if games go on for more than a few minutes at a time.

I don't train before six months I condition. Most dogs live and die without any proper training

The most formative weeks in a dogs life are between 8-15/16 weeks , it's called the socialisation period , introduce them to as many new sights , sounds, places , and willing dog owners as you can so as much as you can isn't 'strange' after that .

Never EVER chase a dog , they run faster and will always be 5 annoying steps ahead when you come close .... As soon as it looks like running away (which pups WILL do ) walk in the opposite direction and call its name once every 20 seconds .... You need to teach them it's more fun interacting with you that what's around it ....


Sorry but just typed all that and realised you may have had a dog before , If you want any training advice pipe up , I'm sure I'm not the only positive reward based dog trainer on here .

It's too early to know for sure, will have a better idea after his second blood test tomorrow but he's had fluids and food and something to settle the stomach and he's a different puppy tonight. Runnning around like a comet.
The early diagnosis is worms, that goes some way to explaining the upset stomach, lethargy, slight anaemia and traces of blood in his faeces.
Got to go back tomorrow for more blood with a stool sample. The results on the parvovirus will take about a week so we have an anxious wait but hopefully it's worms as they are very treatable.

I reckon petplan have gone down hill over the last few years, they used to be very good and were one of the only ones that would take on an older ( typical rescue ) dog. They also did lifetime cover for conditions meaning only one excess to pay for ever. Recently that changed and now you have an excess per year and that excess is doubled. That means for an older dog when you actually might need cover its almost worthless.

On the plus side they do pay out very quickly, my last claim was paid in three days.

All too common in pups, our Patterdale X came from a hunt kennels. We wormed her and she turfed them all out on the grate at our old house, I've got friends who would have been puking for days after seeing that alien birth

It's nice to see him with an appetite, he's eaten like a gannet this afternoon/evening and he settles quietly after he's had a trot around the garden, on a lead so we can steer him away from slugs.
Just left the other half on the sofa doing night watch, I'm off to bed.

Lets hope the good news continues, re chasing dogs,I always found legging it in the opposite direction and they soon decide they dont want to be left behind and are at your ankles, a quick catch on scruff of the neck followed by huge praise/pats gets them loving to come to you.

Worms are very easily treated, so a good outcome. I would guess the parvo test will come back clear.

Well he seems much better tonight, healthy appetite and taking on fluids so he's a lot more sprightly.
