Can you bleed the fuel system with the lift pump at all???

Fuel lift pump, dirty filter on the bottom of the stand pipe in the fuel tank????

Or possibly leafs or some other stuff floating passing the stand pipe....

The engine stops dead
If there’s a blockage surely there would be a drop in power

Diesels will pretty much stop dead when the fuel runs out.

At this point, I'd probably consider installing a clear fuel line or two to see if any air is getting in, re-routing the return line into a container to see if fuel is still returning when it stops, or setting up a gravity feed to bypass the lift pump and filters.

Have a look at the filter again, probably water or carp in the tank

Did you check the filter , in the lift pump? If it is an older pump, the top is held on with a single screw. There should be a gauze filter screen in there, unless someone has chucked it away.

If it has had a newer replacement pump,fitted there will be a 27mm nut , that the fuel pipe screw into. There should be a filter in there.

Also on top of the fuel filter housing, where the banjo bolt for return line goes in , there is a spring loaded ball to regulate fuel pressure to injection pump.
That can stick letting fuel back to tank and low pressure to pump.

Is it one of them fuel filters with the long boat through the middle I need to square section O-rings top and bottom of the filter itself?
If so I can be a toss to get to seal and it's quite common for people not to notice and fit two top O-rings to the filter as the old one is still in there.

Not so sure what the OP's involvement is with the machine or its owner but I assumed that all the basics like fuel/filters etc would have been checked before posting up an issue like this, clearly not the case. You wouldn't expect to hear that the fuel filter was still full of crap after the top end was overhauled Really is back to basics on the fuel side and check everything inc the silly little gauze in the top of the lift pump etc, cant really point at anything until the fuel delivery is eliminated.

A hole has been drilled in fuel cap
On top has been placed an old can with a hole in side
It’s starting and running ok
