Perkins diesel problem

A mate has a Massey Ferguson 30E loader
It’s the industrial version of the Massey Ferguson 135
The engine is not original it’s from a compressor or forklift
It has been given problems lately where the engine stops suddenly without any warning
Yesterday I witnessed this happening
I slacked injector pipe at pump and there is diesel coming out when spinning engine but no smoke from exhaust
After an hour it started and was running ok
This fault started after head gasket was changed
What type of pump is this

Rotary pump? Pour water on it and try to restart when the pump is cold. It seems like the injection pump is not achieving sufficient pressure to pop the injectors as it gets hotter.

If this problem has only come about after a head gasket change it may well be down to tight valve clearance. Just thoughts.

It's a DPA or DPS pump, they are very sensitive to loose fuel pipe connections on the lift pump. If it can draw air instead of fuel it will, any air will stop it.

You have to bleed an injector as well as the pump to get all the air out.

Running for an hour then stopping, my first guess would be fuel starvation building up.
Tank filter blocking up then releasing the crap when the suction stops maybe.
Rotary injection pumps are so damm fussy about incoming fuel flow.

Its the other way around, its starting without a problem when its cooled off for an hour which is why I was thinking along the lines of valve float through tight tappets.

Have you checked the guaze filter that is on the fuel tank outlet valve? If they come off the valve will block.

Who did the head gasket?

As the head bolts are different lengths and if they aren't put in the right places they will pinch on the cam and can make the engine tight.

Try slackening the diesel cap.

i had to do that with my perkins motor on compressor. started 1st time every time . when hot no chance . poured water over it with watering can to cool then it started instantly

Am I correct in thinking that the engine will start and then slowly die after a short period of running, then restart later and then cut out again, in a start/stop re-cycling fashion???


PS... You have the main injector pipes from the injection pump to the injectors, on top of the injectors you have a common leak off pipe that connects all three injectors together and then to the fuel tank.

When the engine stops undo one of the banjo bolts and try to restart the engine immediately.
If the engine starts you have a blocked return to tank fuel line, this causes the injection pump governor to shut the engine fuel supply off.

as above, my uncles 135 would run up to an hour then stop, left for a while it would restart then same again, I changed the micro filter thats on the drain tap, solved the problem. if they did the head gasket tank was off so might have disturbed sediment and clogged that little filter. or they have not fully done a fuel line joint some wheres in the process.

so have you drained and cleaned the tank out i had to on mine when i changed the filter water and rust in the bottom
