A tiny piece of engineering to solve a really not very terrible problem. A pepper mill with decorative nut on top - the nut holds the top on and also regulates how finely or coarsely the mill grinds. In practice, I found the nut tends to loosen. No worse than an annoyance, you say. But why have tools if not to solve problems, so a bit of turning and a quick bit of milling yields a thin locknut.
The overall design still looks nice I think ..
We have possibly foregone something in adjustability but these are the compromises we make.
