I read somewhere, here probably, that kerosene and ATF is an ok homebrew mix. Have been using it for years and seems fine. I say "fine" because I don't place that great an importance on the penetrating side, if it's really stuck, by the time you've got it red hot, there isn't much of anything in there and once cooked back to warm, used engine oil would probably work ok.
But it's cheap and there. Despite writing "penetrating oil" on the side though, I still have to hide the water displacer from colleagues. The can is irresistible. I suspect that's wd40s most important qualities; convenience and the genius of putting it in a clean to use aerosol.
