Had wondered. I know I've always been told it's good stuff, though I've never actually used any, weirdly, so found it hard to believe it might be just that.

tho diesel is very good at penetrating. have a barrel of syuff outside i tend to tie a bit of mig wire round things that are going to be a twerp and let them sit in there for a week and they usally come apart easy. i think the barrel mostly contains diesel,heating oil, hydralic oil, engine oil, atf, thiinners , petrol and some other stuff.

While there's less than 1% of each of the other two ingredients listed on the MSDS they have some interesting properties

The home brew of ATF and acetone... IIRC someone somwhere gathered a bunch of penetrating oils and home brewed varieties to test by measuring the torque needed to undo a bunch of fasteners that'd been soaked in brine or something to corrode them? The ATF/acetone won i think and by quite a margin? Minor PITA to use though as the two aren't miscible and the acetone evaporates FAST so you have to mix it as you need it. I suspect other solvents and light oils/hydraulic fluids would do a similar job, brake fluid definately works but obviously eats paint and various other things ATF won't harm. Personally i keep a can of plusgas to hand or reach for the hot spanner if i'm in a hurry

Penetrating Oil - interesting
This was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters
Here is an interesting finding on Penetrating Oils
Recently “Machinist Workshop Magazine” did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and
bolts that they ‘scientifically rusted’ to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then
tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety
of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them.
This is what they came up with:
Nothing: 516 lbs
WD-40: 238 lbs;
PB Blaster: 214 lbs;
Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs,
Kano Kroil: 106 lbs
(ATF)/Acetone mix (50/50): 50 lbs.
This last “shop brew” of 50% automatic transmission fluid and 50% acetone appears to beat
out the commercially prepared products costing far more.

Would this still be the case if it was put into a small spray bottle of some sort?
Acetone is a good solvent for some (many?) flavours of plastic, as long it didn't eat the spray bottle (or you use an old metal oil can etc) it'd stop evaporation so i guess you'd just need to shake it well? I've only resorted to homebrews when i couldn't find my can of plusgas and wanted to soak something i was gonna attack the next day

This is the reason why homebrew solvents can outperform commercial ones. They only have to remain usable for as long as the job takes, whereas a can of PlusGas or Kroil has to work just as well potentially 5 or 10 years after it was mixed. So various compromises have to be made to ensure that happens. Also homebrew mixtures don't take into account any fumes or how you're going to dispose of it after it's done its job, so can include all kinds of nasty things, whereas commercial ones need to comply with regulations. PlusGas for example almost completely evaporates and the small quantity you need to use won't cause damage to you or the environment.
If you're having to deal with rusty bolts every day then maybe ATF/acetone is a viable solution. But for the average mechanic or homeowner, a can of PlusGas (or even WD40 as it's easy to buy) sitting on a shelf ready for when you need it is far more sensible.

Not much point buying a Water Dispersant, when what you need is a penetrating fluid. Bit like buying a Mini to do house removals with.
ATF / Acetone sits happily in a spray bottle I got with some Marine Clean (POR). The two clearly seperate very quickly, but a quick shake has it ready for use each time. I use Acetone for fibreglass work, so always have 5l of it and after a few gearbox changes, I have plenty of ATF. Rude to not use it!

I discovered plusgas a few years ago and was amazed at the siezed components it has freed for me, so much so I bought 5 litres of it of eBay with free postage(chuffed).
