What are the best/worst penetrating oils around. I only ask a) cos its useful and b) cos my dad gave me some when I was little and ive still got it. It brilliant and smells like nothing ive seen ever again. He got it from his steel works and you only need a tiny spray of it. It is in a yellow paper wrapped tin.. any ideas as to what it could be?. Wow, two posts in one day, im chuffed.

Post a pic of the tin, someone may recognise it. I use home made stuff, 50/50 atf and acetone, just needs shaking every use or it separates.

Releasall used to come in red 1/2 pint tins with yellow labels; smelled a bit creosotey, worked well though.

I use Plusgas, and don't take any notice of the writing on WD40 tins, it is NOT a releasing fluid

Just had a quick peek at the datasheet for PlusGas, and it lists the primary ingredient as kerosene: 60% - 100%, with nowt else of note. It looks like it's nowt more than bog standard kerosene with whatever minor contaminants might be in it.

I'm a fan of PlusGas too. The way you spray it on a rusty nut and watch the foam die down and the liquid disappear as it soaks into the rust and down the threads can be mesmerising.
I wouldn't put too much into it's main constituent being kerosene. After all the human body is mainly water but you wouldn't say 'bah, it's just a bag of water' about a person. There's clearly something quite volatile as it evaporates quickly, and something that helps it break down any repellent action due to rust or dirt on the metal.

WD40 is pure advertising whaffle, there's nothing in it worth anything, or actually does anything they claim. Its main feature is that it evaporates quickly so that you need to buy more, an ideal situation for the manufactures. Whereas a drop of plain oil on your hinge would have lasted years.
