"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

Any offers? have tried winamp and realplayer, no joy.

Use Power DVD. You can get an OEM copy for less than a fiver from Ebay sellers. I think I bought version 9 recently which will play all standard DVDs.

Another vote for cyberlink power DVD, media player is rubbish I got the same message after a windows update, don't even bother to try with it now, powerdvd is much smoother playback. I'm surprised realplayer doesn't work though, do you have the latest version .

I have a feeling the message re the video card is a ploy to get us to go a site and be scammed to death.

Its not a scam, more likely a corrupt or missing codec, I did actually get media player working by downloading this codec pack from here, It worked for me but no responsibility accepted if your computer explodes!!. set a restore point before you start, and scan any downloads with antivirus and adware programs.

Is it an American disk? There would potentially be a conflict on the regional settings of your European DVD player with the American region?

If it’s just a matter of a codex give VLC a try it can play just about anything you can throw at it video and audio, I tend to use it a lot with downloaded content worth a shot as its free it’s at

But you want to scroll down and give Media Player Classic Homecinema a try from the Free Audio Software section. If that won't work (but it should) you could rip the dvd to a common codec format with SmartRipper also to be found if you scroll down to the Free CD / DVD burning & ripping software section.

Tip: If you click the headings of the various sections you get even more softwares to download.

Another vote for VLC media player, never let me down yet. Unlike windows media player

VLC is great, the installer only takes a few Kb up so I carry it around on an USB stick to install on all the laptops I get lent.

I gave up on windows a long time ago

You seem like a fairly prominent member of this community and a jolly nice chap, and seeing as though 2010 appears to be treating me lots better than the last few (just not financially!) I'm more than happy to help you out if I can.

You'll need a bit of software called anydvd which I have somewhere, this allows your computer to play dvd's from anywhere in the world. And yeah, VLC is ace! (and free!)

It's free I think, A great decoder. Just an add on to your Windows Media Player.

Yeah , the basic download is free , can be upgraded to the pro version but that has to be paid for. The basic is great though and does everything most people need.
