Paying by PayPal and I had a little oddity yesterday. It might pay everyone to check. My screen now defaults to the recipient getting paid in USD rather than GBP and I have to manually change it.

I didn't change it to the recipient getting USD & I've I'm sure never paid for anything in USD. Means the recipient gets less after the conversion back to GBP. Sorted now (with @skotl ) but annoying. Are they being a bit sly? I'll check with SWMBO when she surfaces if it's something she changed in PayPal.

Yeah - definitely a bit sneaky. And @Onoff gets a different rate to the one I see, effectively meaning that PayPal score 10% of the cash!

Interesting as paypal give a terrible exchange rate too, so they are getting I think about 7% when I last checked.

My card doesnt have currency conversion fees so when buying stuff in dollars from china, I always paid in dollars directly, although that was back when ebay used paypal for the checkout or in 2020 to order tig welder from Weldes, I payed in Euros.

If you are buying something remotely from someone you don't know than paypal probably offers more protection than S75. Especially as a lot of people on here will buy stuff from people who can't take credit cards.

The rules for bank transfers changed recently as well so its a bit safer to use that as a payment method now

Nope. Paypal are judge and jury and don't have to abide by rules like S75, they make their own up. Even Visa Chargeback is superior to the likes of Paypal. I understand your point about private sales though and I don't have any answer to that.

On a related note, I'm disappointed to see that Revolut have finally managed to get a banking licence.

Strange.... I have just paid an invoice. Paid to the same bank account twice yearly for 3 years.
But it now comes up with words to the effect. IS this a scam. If it is and we have to refund you, we will apply £100 fee for doing so. (I can't screen shot it as the app prevents me doing so)

£100 is the maximum banks are allowed to charge as an admin fee. Some banks are charging £25. Others will charge in a case-by-case basis.

Paypals protection is a joke. In my case I ordered £400 of computer bits, some of which arrived dead. I initially I just wanted a replacement hard drives but the replacements were packed badly and also did not work. My initial claim for £80 couldnt be amended to the full order value. They messed me about for months. The paypal claim go me only £80 back despite them having tracking and confirmation the whole order was returned and it should be a full refund

However, contacted bank and they said they would step in if paypal wont sort it, despite not being obliged to. However I never got to test this as within a few more weeks, the shop refunded - I managed to speak to a reasonable person and made it known that I would be arriving in the next few days to retreive the value, and that got things moving.

I have a business PayPal account as the mainstream banks I approached were not interested in giving me an account.
It means I can take PayPal payments on my website alongside regular card payments.
My personal PayPal account is also used a lot. I've not had a problem and they have always resolved in my favour.
You tend to speak as you find and my opinion may change in time

With many apologies to @Onoff, and with thanks to @Stueeee for pointing me in the right direction, it looks like this was caused by my "Default Wallet Currency" in PayPal being set to USD! No idea how that happened but, if you experience similar, open PayPal, go to you wallet and click "Manage Currencies".
In there, if GBP isn't primary click the three dots and make it so...
