I've never bought spare genuine batteries for various tools over the last 30 years. Ebay specials all the way, I've not been disappointed by one yet. Generally Makita or Bosch used for fairly intensive diy.
I have had a couple of dodgy genuine Bosch, 10 years ago maybe.

Always buy genuine. Lithium batteries and lithium cells are one of the most counterfeited, mislabelled things we've ever had in modern times tbfh, it's not worth saving 20 quid on a battery to get one that is half the capacity and half the power output as soon the initial charge drops off.
Hell a massive amount of those cheap cells and batteries aren't even using new cells in them - they rip apart thousands of old laptops, salvage any cell that looks remotely working okay, then stick a new wrapper around it and sell it on.
It's immediately obvious there's not really a cartel going on with batteries when you add up what it would cost you to re-cell your own tool batteries even if you're bulk buying reputable lithium cells at trade prices.

Totally, I don't think you can buy quality cells to re-cell an 18v 5ah for much less if at all than buying a genuine battery. I've got one that got cooked and whilst it seems a massive waste it's really not worthwhile.

I was interrupted by grandspawn's needs.
I've also never followed the rules about battery care. The ones about never leaving batteries in the tool, out of the tool, in the charger, out of the charger, fully charging them, part charging them, using them every day, not using them every day, etc, etc, etc. They always seem to last about 7 years, nicads, nimhs, whatever.

leave a laptop on the charger at 100% for a year even brand new and you'll end up with a battery at about half capacity by the end of it already. Seen that so many times with people using them for corporate desktop replacements. Fortunately some brands let you limit charging to 80% these days, same as some phones do.
I've been through this with Makita batteries, out of the 4 non-genuine batteries only 1 is still working! All 3 of the others have been re-celled by me & had a better BMS fitted.
The BMS (the pcb that prevents over discharge) on the copy batteries is based on the old LXT one & doesn't monitor every cell in the battery. This allows the cells to discharge & charge unevenly, shortening their life. I fitted a better BMS that monitors all cells.

I have a pair of the DeWalt pattern batteries ...I only use them for my work light and the small drill and for that purpose they've been fine.
The genuine batteries have higher spec deep cycle cells I think so they can take the fast discharge abuse better. I also have the Dewalt dual volt monster battery....that's used in the grinder and the circular saw and is excellent....saves burning thro the smaller 5ah ones on a big task.

Don't know about the DeWalt ones but I got stung with Fakita batteries. I think one of the things that's a problem is a faulty battery management system in the packs which is vital. Bricking of Fakitas and FakeWalts possible? I just 'grab the nettle' and pay through the eyes.
Got 8 Makita 18V packs in total and an adaptor to use the Dewalt Multitool.

as someone else said earlier, cheapest way to aquire genuine batteries (and I only use genuine ones, plenty i know have tried copies, theyve all been average at best) is to look out for the deals where you get 2 batteries, a charger and a tool for £130 or whatever, then just sell the tool on fb marketplace (other disposal methods are available), end up with decent batteries for a fair price.......
My sparky mate does that with makita ones every time theyre on offer at screwfix (he has a LOT of cordless gear) and at last count had something like 50 batteries active, with a couple of buckets full of dead ones (the majority of which are chinese copies) floating about in the unit that he cant bring himself to throw out

I've got a 3rd party BMS pcb in one of my m18 packs, as the original failed.
It's been fine.
When I find a little spot welder that works I'll make up another pack, as you can get empty shells from the usual suspects.
I'll use quality 18650, tested, cells from laptop batteries and there is no reason that I can see why the unit should not work well.
