Paton StandardMig 200

I'm considering buying one of these and wish to use gasless wire but they don't come with the VK 'knurled' type wire rollers.

I'm keen to know if anyone has used a standardmig from Paton and their opinion of them and also what type of roller they use so I can get the correct gasless one if I go for a Paton. I'll be using 0.8mm and 0.9mm wire.

I’ve owned a Standard Mig 160 for approximately 3 years. I’ve not used mine for gas less mig so can’t comment on what rollers you’d need.

The build quality is very good. The casing isn’t flimsy and I’m left with the impression that it’s built to last. There’s lots of different functions on these welders that I haven’t used. I’m sure that someone with more experience and a greater knowledge of what they do would probably make use of them!

The only two very small negatives are the push button function/menu buttons and the instruction manual. Some users find the push buttons difficult to operate with gloved hands. I haven’t really found this a problem. I’ve had a look at www.paton.uk and the new version of the standard migs now appears to have a rotary knob for adjustment.

The instruction manual is basic and the translation could be better, but they are fighting a war.

I would buy one again and have just purchased a Paton ProTig ac/dc 200.

New versions of Paton MIG-s have a rotary push-button for adjustments. Must be asked from dealers as probably they want to sell the old stock with buttons.

My mate was looking for a welder and I convinced him to get one of the refurbished 160s. I set it up for him and gave him a few lessons and I have to say I was impressed with it . Lovely machine to weld with and punched above its weight. Got him laying decent beads in no time. We were using gas though and I'd recommend you get a gas bottle anyway.

There have been lots of threads on here about the Paton migs, I have the Standard mig 200, and as above appears to be a very well built machine, it’s the first welder I’ve owned though so can’t compare it to other machines
Do yourself a favour though and get a gas bottle

A friend of mine on my recommendation has also bought one of the refurbished 160’s. He’s also really pleased with it. He’s going to try it on gas less. Once he has, I’ll repost to let everyone know how he gets on. I must admit the gas less has advantages when it’s windy. There’s always a breeze where I live, but I’m fortunate to have a garage. I’m not sure what size flux core reels you can use?
