Paton 200 mig newbie settings

Hey all,

So I've bitten the bullet on the paton 200 recently but the manual and instructions don't help with what settings to start with.

I'm a total newb, never welded before anything in my life and the paton clearly isn't aimed at a newbie, there is no guide table as to what settings to use so as a total newbie I'm left playing with stuff I've zero idea about.

I'm happy to learn but surely paton should throw new dogs a bone and get us in the ball park with a guide?

Does anyone have settings table for paton or one that will work? I'm going to use gasless 0.8mm and 100% argon gas for stainess/alum in future.

Best place to start is the guide from the manufacturer of the wire you are using.
Paton welders are pretty decent and tend to deliver the power on the display.

Or let us know ow what thickness metal you are welding and someone can give you some setting to start with

I would suggest starting with straight beads on 2 or 3mm thick steel, aiming to run an inch or two continuously. Reckon with 30 to 40 Amps per millimetre of thickness. Set the torch polarity negative for gasless wire, with the work return cable and clamp plugged in to the positive Dinse socket.
Turn the voltage up until it starts to burn through and the wirespeed up until you can feel the wire pushing against the work during the weld, and then back off a little from these maximum settings.

Now being as it's percissing down outside today (well it is here.......), put a brew on, then go to the top of this page and click on "Mig" in the green bar.

Spend the time reading all the sections with-in and find the semi-hidden power/thickness/wire feed chart print a copy off for reference, it will help you an immense amount with your new welder......

The descriptions are somewhat confusing, but 2-nd or 3-rd rows should be for mild steel with 82% argon mix.

I had a Paton for a while as a newbie as well... and had the same issues. Dual display with wire speed and voltage, with push button very fine incremental adjustments - too much adjustability & features for my poor brain.
I could see that a Paton could be a very good bit of kit in the right hands, and when I got the settings right for what I was trying to weld, it welded nicely.
I freely admit I'm happier with the Oxford MigMaker 180-1 I have now though - 6 power positions on one knob, and a wire speed potentiometer knob.

I knew it would be like this, but I wanted the ability to weld other stuff with pulse for other things I'll use it for later.

However, to be fair.... 5 year warranty, currently reduced 15%, I got a torch upgrade to parweld mb25, good gas valve for under £500.....bargain.
