Chimney. I've got a length of old cast iron drainpipe Sat in the garden... kept for just this purpose.

(I've got an old 47kg gas cylinder that I fancy try ing to make into a patio heater cum bbq... It's had the gas tap open for years, but I'm still a bit wary of attacking the thing with a grinder or flame )

what you will find is the chimney will be useless

as all the smoke will come up the bbq way only closing that part off will the chimney become used

I wonder how it would just work in this configuration? No flue. Take the plate off at the front and load the wood through there.

I think I'd need to raise it up a bit off the deck.

Where would it draw, up from the bottom or in through the open front?

Try it I guess.

the material is too thick so will blead loads of heat away from the fire

Make a fire resistant lining. Ceramic pipes and semi-cylindrical halves with grooves "key-lock" come in different diameters. The lining will re-radiate heat. As I understand it, the project is in the style of an industrial loft, where the style determines.

The main thing is the safe removal of flue gas without leaks and regulation of the incoming air into the furnace
