PAT testing

I'm looking at training to do pat testing as ive got things that need doing and so have my parents and it would be a good weekend job.

I've found a course to do online the kit just wondering if anyone thinks this kit is any good?

Also, would I need public liability insurance if I were to do work for people other than myself or for my parents?

cut throat job to be in i think im sure and ive heard underhand dealing people cheaking out a sticker seeing its near date and just we are here to to the pat testing

had the same years ago with fire fire extinguisher

urgh, it's an industry I sometimes come across and it's a total pain. I have PAT testing quals but never used it. It was part of my electrical training in college years ago.

Often get them cold calling the office and almost threatening us that if we don't get stuff tested we are in big trouble. Never let on that they're talking to people who have an idea what they are doing!

Then we go to some of our commercial installations and find their bloody stickers plastered all over equipment they have absolutely no business touching, despite us stating they should not be tested.

So i'm not really a fan of the business!!

Did it years ago only for a couple of regular customers, mind numbing work though, crawling under desks with a birds nest of wires trying to work out what goes to what! or in workshops where everything is filthy and greasy

Was ok money though I priced per test, simple fixes done and charged for as you went along like a plug change or fuse change, if you buy the kit get something that hooks up to your PC with the relevant software to sort the results

It's something I steer clear of at all costs!
It's a very boring job to me. Crawling around under people's desks that don't want you there gets boring very quickly and it's usually some dirty fat bloke with smelly feet who's desk it is, anything worth looking at usually gets up an walks off for a tea break...
Edit: the Uni-T gear is usually quite good.

P.A.T. is a cut your throat business.

It is hard work for little reward, not a week end job.

The kit looks cheap end of it.

Plus you will need insurance, spare parts and the other consumables.

I have done it through work, I also do it at MIS etc.

But I rather not.

I have seen the little green n white labels on sale for not a lot for a roll of 100..... and I know of some people that dont have test equipment......

This will do the same job.

Don't ask any RN Tiffs about it, they never knew how to switch it on.

i used to do it at a private school for 20 years . probably about 1200 items . took 4 days to do them with some help . some firm came in and would do them for 50 pence an item so i told em to get on with it , not done any sinse uts a big racket as hal;f the stuff dont get moved and double insulated so just a visual check of cables and a sticker planted on its a racket

You should have indemnity insurance even if you are just doing it for yourself and family.

Going rate now, on contarct is 40p an item, if tested. 29p an iten given a visual.

Any hire equipment, vending machines or items belonging to a third party is visual.

Certification is as varied as the day is long.

Companies use it to get in the door.

the items i found the most fails of was extension leads kettles and hoover flexes along with a few power tools mainly on inner cores of cables showing or cut flexes

yes it wont cost a lot mines about £120 a year cover for a million. it covers me for everything apart from chemical works petrol stations and working on mainframe computer centers. im covered for shops offices schools flats and houses and factories working on 3 phase. im not covered for fitting aerials though they must mean the bilsdale mast not joe soaps chimney or loft aerial

I lost faith in PAT tester folk when I found a computer desk linking lead at my Son's school with a 13 amp plug at each end, meaning that the plug was live when it was plugged in and could be handled by children. The plugs both had a "passed" label with that day's date.The headmistress was not happy as the lead had been made by a teacher.
