Think there's a bit more to them than just a relay.

They ensure that the warning system to tell you of a failed bulb doesn't get upset, they also have the buzzer in them for the indicator tell tale.

The one in my Merc is the same as the one I fitted to the Passat

They are indeed a bit more than a relay. Lots of cars now, are using fewer bulbs, so the functions get doubled up. Ie, the brake light bulb doubles as a sidelamp, being fed 8v (for example) when sidelights are on, so it glows dimly, then getting full 12v when the brakes are applied. Those bypass relays can detect this and switch the trailer lights accordingly.
