Parts for Haverhill (Bruhes & Brush Holders)

Hi Everyone,
I'm posting this for a mate who is not on't tinternet.

He has a Haverhill welder which is powered by a 5 1/2hp Honda engine. I can't see anything to indicate a model number. We think that it's a 120 or 125 amp welder and it has a 110volt outlet.

the brushes & brush-holders have had it. I could do to find a supplier for both brushes & brush holders. At a push I can mod some other brushes to fit.

Can anyone suggest anywhere in the UK who might have a stock of spares for this unit.

It would be helpful if you posted a picture of the welder so we know which alternator you are asking about...

No idea if the picture will come out as I've never uploaded a picture before! Anyhoo, we have brush holders with brushes for the Weldagen 200 machine. Downside is that they are rare as rockinghorse droppings and so are expensive - £49.29 each plus VAT.
Check dimensions - Hole where clamp to shaft is is about 12mm, length from pivot to end of brush holder is about 53mm. If you can measure brush section, they are 16mm x 8mm.

£50 a pop doesn't seam expensive to me. Try your local motor rewind place you can often get blanks that you fettle yourself to suit.

Glad the pic came out and just remembered - these brush assemblies fail because of wear caused by the slip rings arcing and then erode the brush to the point where they wear down the brass holders. Before fitting new brushes/holders, clean up and polish the slip rings. Best done by putting the armature between centers in a lathe, more dangerously done by running the motor and applying emery to the rings - of course, as a professional, I cannot possibly recommend the latter method.
Also, note that not all carbon brushes are made of the same grade of material. Soft ones will wear quickly, too hard will wear out the slip rings and the brass ring is not very thick!

I don't have aphoto to post and won't be seeing Mick for a couple of days. The pic of the brush holders posted above is similar but the one that are fitted have curved arms rather than the straight arms shown in this one.

They are expensive but if it keeps the machine going it's got to be worth it.

Any suggestions for the curved arm version??

Just to round this thread off, I took the computer back to the welder and showed Mick the replies and photo. The brush holders shown in the photo is the correct one. Straight arms, the curve that I spoke about is that cut by them rubbing on the commutator!, not how I remembered it at all.

Being an inventive cheapskate, Mick has repaired the worn holders using some sheet brass shim and a soldering iron. It seems to be working at the moment, it will tell if it gets so hot that it melts the solder.

Hi can anyone tell me where to get hold of brushes for a Haverhill weldagen 200 the one I have removed looks pretty much the same as the picture in these threads.

Sorry to report that we have run out of these and I don't know if the company we purchased them from still exists. As there are so few of these old machines around now, it's not worth investing in stock and goodness knows what they'll cost now as they were expensive when we got our last delivery about 5 years ago.
If you can find a medium hardness carbon brush of similar dimensions or larger, filing them to fit may be your only option.
