Stink!! Small confined working space. Solvent means evaporation which means a have to breathe fumes all day and contaminates my air. I have a clean room next to it and that is where I filter my air from.

Toxic isn't the problem, as soon as you put an oil part in it will be toxic anyway. I don't want flammable.

As mentioned, paraffin or kerosene won't ignite unless they're either hot else if you have something in there acting as a wick. Put a match to a bowl of either and it will merely extinguish the flame before ignite.

If you want something without fumes for degreasing, use an alkali, but those may attack aluminium to some degree, and will darken the surface of copper based metals. Sodium carbonate, (you can buy it in pure form for spa/hot-tub use, or in a mix as washing soda), would be the best with regards to effectiveness without being dangerous to skin. You'll be hard pushed to beat kerosene, (heating oil), though.

I've only seen it in the small gallon drums, and at that price it's £200. Never thought to ask for the drum the garages must buy!! How much do you buy and what sort of cost?

I got a huge drum of it but can't remember where from. I will have a look who I get back to the UK on Tuesday. It worked out a lot cheaper. It also lasts for ages. I just filter it out once in awhile and I have a speaker magnet in the bottom that collects all the metallic gunk.

I got a huge drum of it but can't remember where from. I will have a look who I get back to the UK on Tuesday. It worked out a lot cheaper. It also lasts for ages. I just filter it out once in awhile and I have a speaker magnet in the bottom that collects all the metallic gunk.

I'll check my local motor factors, they will sell it. How do you filter it? Good tip with the magnet

Mine was from the local motor factors, nowhere near that price as paraffin would have been cheaper in overpriced 5ltr cans from the ironmongers.

We used to go to the pet shop/ironmongers/fishing tackle shop in the village and fill up your container of choice with paraffin. Now the 4 litre plastic containers cost about 8 quid from the garage if they have any in.

I just about used 4 litres renovating the lathe.

Some petrol stations still have a pump for paraffin. Kerosene should be more readily and cheaply available though. The last container I got was from a place down the road. If you have a local heating/fuel oil supplier, there's a good chance they may have a kerosene fuel pump at their depot to fill hand containers. Worth an ask.

Yes at work we use paraffin in a machine mart unit.

I do too, I've got a right greedy parts washer, must be 3ft by 2ft. Can't beat solvents. Mines a 110v pump, submerged in the liquid.

Fair enough, diesel does stink and heating oil's not great either but white spirit and paraffin are a bit less smelly.

Should only smell in use though if you have a snug fitting lid.

If you're going down the detergent route, it might be worth going to a place that caters for agriculture or hauliers. My local one stocks sachets of "deb", about 3litres to mix up with water and make 25litres of solution. It seems to work well

it does,nt matter what you use as none smelly,after a couple of weeks use its going to become diluted oil products anyway. i cant smell mine with white spirit but do often get a whiff of the best way to describe "engine" so you might as well put something in thats gunna work and not break the bank
