I am needing to replace the degreaser in my parts cleaner. Having been using low solvent degreaser and not being very impressed I am looking for am alternative. How does citric acid to as a degreaser? Will it cause any problems with the pump or cause any other damage to the parts cleaner with prolonged use?

Ive used common white spirit for years with no probs..the current batch has been in for 18 months and done at least 5 engine builds plus loads of other stuff and still going strong

Citric acid doesn't touch grease at all, I use it for de rusting and parts need to be free of grease for it to work. And it will attack and aluminium parts.

That's what I was after, thank you! Back to the drawing board for what to fill the tank with!

A lot of the modern stuff is water based which is the problem. I use paraffin and then wipe the component with brake cleaner to finish it.

I know, and not cheap neither. 40 litres of crap which runs at well over £100!!!

Might try some of the degreaser you mix with water for the ultrasonic cleaners. I use air agitation in me parts cleaner.

I think this is the big hurdle regarding cutting into oil and grease...Anything toxic and dangrous tends to work much better than save the planet and sperm whales gear across the board

Toxic isn't the problem, as soon as you put an oil part in it will be toxic anyway. I don't want flammable.

I used the Bilt Hamber stuff, Surfex HD, not as good as paraffin but was OK. You don't use it neat so it goes a reasonable distance before you need to change it.

I've only seen it in the small gallon drums, and at that price it's £200. Never thought to ask for the drum the garages must buy!! How much do you buy and what sort of cost?

Any way of warming the solution? hot works better than cold for both solvent and solvent free

Why is non flammable a factor? Just don't use grinders or torches near it.

buy it regular - £22 for 20ltr. Don't rekon the pump will like it though and don't imagine the coating on the tank staying good forlong
