You've not been trying thenI am still on the original tip as well which is amazing although my lathe only gets used once or twice a week.

I certainly don't part off Hood styleYou've not been trying then
That's real skill....... I've had a chequered history with parting, Banned as an apprentice for endangering the life of the turner on the next lathe. Never really was comfortable with it over the pastI hated parting off until I bought one of the cheap Chinese blades with inserts. Mind you having a Colchester Triumph helps as well. It munches through on power feed no problem at all. I am still on the original tip as well which is amazing although my lathe only gets used once or twice a week.
Around a grand for one. IF you can find one.If I was to get round to making one, my starting point would be a length of hydraulic cylinder piston rod and some good quality linear bearings.
An early taper turning attachment for my old lathe went for around £150, after collection, last week. Now appears to be the same one (cleaned up a bit) on epay for £750!

Like you say...once you understand the principle it's pretty straightforward. The Student has the telescopic crossfeed screw already. The main issue is making something substantial enough to resist deforming. One of the reasons I tend to think more towards flat bar as preferential. No, not mine. I have never had one. I would make my own if/when needed, I expect. I have one small part of the bracketry, I think. I have access to hydraulic piston rods and the rest does not seem too difficult to fabricate.
I’ve cut a few tapers with the top slide - mostly tapered pins. Morse tapers with soft ends are fairly cheap, so I usually keep a couple, or three in stock.
