I'm having a bit of an issue while parting EN19/4140 Chromoly with HSS. Am I peeing in the wind?
I think I'm set up. The tool is on centre height, dialled in perpendicular. I'm hand feeding and tried running at every speed the old SB 9A has to offer. The tool gets blunt rather quickly, slow or fast.
I've tried various different grinds, but it only works for a short period of time before it loses its edge.
I'm keeping the feed constant by using both hands, to keep pressure on the lead screw, which makes squirting cutting oil a pain. (I believe it needs constant lubrication/cooling?)
Taking longitudinal cuts and facing is fine, although I am using carbide insert tools for these cuts. I don't have a carbide parting tool yet.
Am I missing something, or am I asking too much of this old lathe or the HSS?
I got the hacksaw on it, but it is barely touching it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.
