Now i know its hardly a hadron collider, but curious all the same!

Maybe in need more of a description -

The Van de Graaff will produce a spark in air of about 10cm when the salad bowl is not attached.
Given that the dielectric breakdown of air is about 3 million volts per meter, this translates to 300,000 volts (assuming linear relationship)

The small ball is painted in conductive paint. Its low mass (polystyrene).

What happens is that, when it hits one of the strips connected to the dome of the Van de Graaff, the ball picks up charge, which then repels it away from the strip that has just charged it. It then rolls over a grounding strip, and looses the charge. The momentum and electrostatic attraction carries it on to the next strip, where the whole lot happens again.

Small sparks occur when the ball rolls over the strips.

Its no rail gun, but i think its cool.

It looks more like a salad bowl with the last grape in it. Got a craving for M&Ms now
