I had the same problem on previous car (Merc E class 320CDI), the sensors are all the same around the car and there was no need to remove any plastic - I bought one new sensor and plugged it into each sensor in turn until the fault cleared. Cheaper than getting Merc to plug it into their machine to tell me which one was at fault.
I did have to get some touch up paint though, as the sensor outside face is body-coloured.

Im not a real driver then........I love em........wonderful........I can get in spaces I wouldnt expect to without them..........they even catch OAPs sneaking round the back when youre reversing

Ive had them in the last 4 or 5 cars..........I dont even look around now when Im reversing........this one does the steering for you...just press a button and the accelerator

That's cheating.... What I was meaning was (furiously back pedalling) I can fit after market ones to the rear cheaper than I can get 1 merc sensor because as you rightly say you get more points for getting pensioners if you also get an early warning signal. What I don't need though is the front ones telling me there's an overgrown hedge on the left hand side every t junction.

Years ago I wondered why our Capri used to have a dent in the middle of the bumper - then caught my wife going down the drive and hitting the towbar on my XJ6 to know when it was time to stop !

I'm really not inclined to go to merc on this one but more than happy to solve it using process of illumination......as it were.....ill let you know. I have a feeling, on the W220, the sensors are all in the bumper mouldings which are removable.

dont want to jump about quite yet but i may just have fixed it. went all the way to Heathrow, on to Richmond, back to Reading and now home. Never missed a beat.

Just FYI - you can do a rough test of the sensors without fancy diagnostic equipment (well the technological type). Get the system working and then stick your ear close to the sensor - they tick. Listen to each in turn and if one or more isn't ticking you may well have found your problem (whether it's the sensor or wiring is the next problem). On my MINI they are the same as a 3 or 5 Series BMW and come in at under a tenner a throw if you shop around.

My wife's B Class rear sensors are playing silly buggers at the moment too. Using Merc's STAR diagnostic system the exact sensor that's at fault can be picked up (and subsequently replaced) which is what I'm going to do. If you're looking for a decent Indy Merc garage that won't rip you off for diagnosing the faulty sensor then I can recommend Mercury in Aldershot.
I picked up a replacement sensor from eBay for £18 and hope to be able to get it done in a couple of hours.

Problem is, with the S class, if you try to switch the sensors on and it detects an issue it switches them off and you cant override it so the only time I could hear them clicking was when the system was working ok (in the rain) Anyroad up, I found one where the connector had been twisted for no apparent reason, untwisted it, re connected it and so far..............
