Coming on sale at lidls soon,anyone know what the base is,ie acrylic or solvent?

if its like the aldi one you can spray it , thin it down with some solvent , ive used white spirit and thinners both seem to work ok

Thing is my nearest lidl is 9 miles away dont wanna have a wasted trip,cant seem to find any spec on it

I have used quite a bit of the Aldi paint in the past with very good results, but now they don't get a good range of colours, usually black, white silver now.

I’ve not sprayed it, but have thinned it with white spirit when a bit thick for brushing. I’ve used both Lidl & Aldi ..... Lildi? Both good stuff. I prefer the Lidl aerosols personally, but not much in it.

I can't find the link now but I think there was an indication that both Lidl and Aldi metal paint were produced by the same German manufacturer. I have used the Lidl acrylic based spray paint to paint wooden Christmas decorations and thought it was very good. I did our gates with the Aldi straight to metal paint - found the tinned one ok but hard work to put on with a brush, so switched to the aerosol version and found it quick and easy to use with a good finish. I also used the aerosol on my car restoration (car is black) in the boot and engine compartment. It was brilliant for this as it dries to a very hard, dull gloss. I highly recommend the Aldi metal spray paint, but I think the Lidl one will be just as good. It was £3 when I bought mine and I can't see anything branded that would be equivalent value for money.

What ratio of thinners to Aldi tinned metal paint did you use, Cobbler? I think my initial brushing problem might have been down to struggling to get the paint sufficiently mixed to get an even coat.

I didn’t use any particular ratio, it was a bit thick, it was a bit cold really for painting. I put the tin in warm water, that made it runnier, but as soon as it went on the metal it cooled & went sticky, so I just added a small amount of white spirit, tried again & added a bit more. I much prefer the spray cans, you can bang it on thick, even if it runs it seems to flatten itself out.

anything like that ..start off with 10% solvent and try it on some scrap , work up to 20% if needed

I bought a few tins of this at Lidl's when it was in stock several months ago, and earlier today I finally got around to putting a coat of it on my trailer frame. 3 hours later it's still not even started to skin ?!?!
On the tin, the closest thing I can find to drying times is where it says I need to wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat. How long have people found this stuff taking before it finally DOES fully go off?

Its good paint but the drying time is slow like old fashioned cellulose paint or household oil based paint, made worse by this cold weather & humidity!

Did you thin the paint with white spirit, that will slow the drying time. You are better using the lidl universal thinners.

Na, I didn't thin it. I actually bought a can of the thinners from Lidl at the same time in case I wanted to spray some of the stuff, but for the trailer (With it's heavely pitted original metalwork) I just rollered it on as it came from the tin. I put a reasonable coat on it in one go, but I'm now thinking I'd have been better off putting several patchy thin coat on and leaving it a few days between each.

It does take ages - especially in colder weather.
And it stays soft for quite some time. It was fine on the trailer I just sold. It had 3 years to harden

I just went out and had a prod. It seems the paint's hardened up a reasonable bit now. Unfortunately, it seems we're destined to get solid rain for the next week, so giving it all a second coat is going to be on hold for a while longer..........Then I'll just have to wait a month for it to fully cure before refitting all the composite decking planks on with about a million top hat section nuts and wide headed bolts. .
No real worries though. Between bad weather, ill health, and getting side tracked, the things been in kit form for well over 6 months now. It's only had an hour here and an hour there thrown at it in that time, usually just after I've thought "Damn it, this would've been so much easier if I'd already got my little trailer back on the road".

Yeah. If you do a rush job you only end up having to do things twice, but if you keep putting it off, you can sometimes get away with not even having to do it once !
