When fibreglass resin is catalysed the resin sets, during this Styrene gas fumes off giving the characteristic smell, If the item is thick or deep, much of this gas will be trapped within the casting. You will notice it particularly if drilling a thick lump of GRP or filler (Bondo) as you pull the drill out there may be a visible blow out of gas & debris from the hole. Styrene is highly inflammable & causes laminators exposed to it often to be quite crazy!
I have found drilling deep holes in sticky stuff that a drill with its shank slightly reduced often drills much better as friction build up on the shank is less.
Sorry about thread drift!
Compression molded parts, 65% glass content, they drill the long holes (5/8" dia 14" deep) as they can't core them. Everyday, in production.
No styrene was harmed in the making of these parts.
