Paper shredder

Don't seem to have much luck with these. I need something small which will fit under a desk but which manages to actually do what it should.

Cheaper offerings either break after 12 months, get choked up with one piece of A4 where there stated capacity is 10 pages, or the motor burns out.

More commercial ones are too big for an office.

Any recommendations folks?

Rexel is one of the ones i recently binned. Does this cope with regular use?

Sadly, I've had the same experience as you. I've now come to consider them as consumables.

but my main advice is stop buying those under desks ones there not that good

proper standing office shredder will do it better

My Rexel ProStyle5 works perfectly and seems to eat thin cardboard and paper with ease.....

I tried water years ago, a 8” stack of old bills and paperworks I’d collected over the years, so I dumped them into a tub of water to let them turn into mush,…. except they didn’t, they stayed as perfectly legible sheets of paper.

So I took them out and drained them, thought I’d burn them in a small bonfire. Except they don’t want to burn, unless screwed up in a ball several sheets at a time.

I eventually ended up making a rather bigger bonfire one evening, and that finally did the trick…..little bits of glowing red paper floating all around the neighbourhood, good job it was dark.

Over the years I have had good performance from Fellowes, try to get one that has metal teeth but all shredders will jam.

Both of mine were for office work and do their thing well but could be time consuming.

Nowadays I tend to use an all metal construction bin type, holes in the side, a bit of white spirit and WOMPH!, destruction of all paperwork guaranteed.

We had a great one in work, no need to remove staples and it would do CDs as well. Unfortunately someone else claimed it, as I now have many, many bank statements that I'd like to shred. The mini incinerator will probably be the solution now.

I've got one of these nothing-special ones, and am currently trying to figure out why it shreds so slowly. I think I've picked out all the stuff that was clogging up the teeth, but it's still really slow. I've been spraying a bit of WD40 onto the teeth from time to time, as the big one we had made a point of saying it needed to be oiled regularly.

Consider the addition of bleech or dye, to make illegible. Caustic or acid should disolve the paper.

A quicker method of shredding may be to use a large food blender and do it wet.

Yes quick and free..
I put our stuff in the bottom of the garden bin with a slash of water,
with garden rubbish in there..

you have as much luck with them as i do then over the last 10 years ive had as meny as the 10 shredders

3 new a few given a few bought 2nd hand

in varius makes none do any better than the other all new ones broke in the 1st year and did not go back for repair they just sent new ones out untill the warrenty the given oneswhere at the end of there life but done me ok ish untill i got another and the 2nd hand ones prob only done as good as the new ones but just did not cost as much the best one was a few hundred quid one bought 2nd hand for 35 quid did near last a year but in the end i got fed up with pulling the drawer in and out as it keped saying drawer missing i even tryed by passing the sencer with no luck

I had a big commercial one (Fellowes I think) out of a skip a few years ago, a plastic gear between the motor and the blades had shed most of it's teeth rendering the thing scrap.

Have you looked at a shredding service instead? No idea what they cost but must be cheaper than buying a new shredder every year.

I use a similar method, stuff them in a feed bag, but of red diesel, one wood fire lighter, job sorted.
