i hate welding upside down, wedged half under a car just so i can see where i'm aiming the mig torch
everything was good upto that point sill on, floor patch done then chassis rail....bugger, it's just anoying that can't get the grinder in the to clean the weld up.....grrrr!

I dont weld rusty cars, its a crap job imo!
I get asked about once a month, 'Can you weld my car up?'
Answers usually along the lines of 'Yes, but im not going to'
or '£30 an hour, and you strip it all out'

Then a gasp, ' But the garage only quoted my £25 an hour'

to many bodge artists round here,i've seen so really awful patch's, patch a 5cm hole with a 20cm plate a few tack welds/filler and some underseal for good measure
i like my car iits survived 43 years

Ill see your oversized plate tack welded on, and ill raise you sills glued in place using underseal on my rangie by prev owner. Worst part of job, cleaning underseal off to weld them on after. At least he hadnt distorted them with the heat

I take the view that once metal is rusted beyond normal surface rust i.e. 'flaking', its finished its usable life and should be disposed.

I cant stand rust.

You'd easily get £50 an hour for car welding around here. Before I'd decided to do it all myself, the best price I got for replacing a rear arch (and it was literally just starting to rust) was almost £1000!!!!!

Car repair I agree is expensive.

In London you can pay up to a grand on replacing a clutch on an average 2.0 saloon.

Best travel to a Mr. Clutch or similar get it done for a third the price, or better still weld up a car ramp and do it yourself if you've got the time.

I think Euro car parts will sell a clutch for an average 2.0 for £200 inc VAT.

Thats because changing a clutch is no longer the simple job of yore...
I remember doing clutches on old rwd cars and it was a doddle, drop the propshaft, take the box off and bingo. Even mini's were easy when you remembered that you jacked the engine up one end.
A few months back I had to do that job as part of swapping the engine in mrs fluffy's mondeo estate. Its a case of engine out, as you cant seperate in the car engine bay. Which on a mondeo means engine and box has to go downwards in one unit and the car lifted off it. Which means all the driveshafts off, the steering and rack off, the subframe off the body (which is aligned by special tools that cost hundreds apiece, unless you make witness marks before removing ) , oh the radiator has to come off too. In fact, when its all out, you basically have a car shell with interior, fuel tank, and rear axle still fitted. Oh and I had to remove the gpl front end kit in its entirety to do the job as the "certified professional installers" had ran the pipework underneath the subframe next to the nice hot exaust and bolted the vapouriser to the engine mount. We wont mention the bulkhead cutoff valve being mounted inside the front bumper...

It is the worst design for accessbility ive ever seen and I wasted a week of evenings and two valueable weekends on it, and I will never undertake this job again. Next time its the knackers yard for it.

You and me both, id rather sweep the streets than weld rotten old cars up.
