Pallet to Holland

Hello, I wish to send a Citroen DS gearbox to a specialist in Holland. He suggests strapping it to a small pallet.
Is that safe enough or should I build a box from plywood?
What is a 'small pallet?
Are there industry standards?
What are the spacings for fork lift tines so I can add blocks underneath?
I see pallets everywhere until I need one, just keep my eyes open?

So many questions..

What size is the gearbox?

Pallets come in two sizes: 40" x 48", or "europallet" (which is smaller).

I worked at a motor factors for a couple of months, and engines/gearboxes were shipped on europallets, with a plywood crate built around them.

Watch out for oil leaks! They could cost you a LOT of money! (If the courier comes after you for all the damaged parcels)

all items like engine's n gearboxes HAVE to be drained and if exposed (open pallet) clean as well.....
I'd expect it to cost around £75.....
I had an Isuzu 3liter D engine delivered from Bolton, Lancs to near Bordox, Fr.....it cost £225 all in....took 4 days...euro pallet.....

I would drain out the fluid & shrink wrap it as a belt & braces approach before boxing it up

A euro pallet would be my choice

Just use a standard euro pallet 120x80.
Make sure drained and clean.
Put something absorbant like an old blanket underneath.
Ratchet strap down and shrinkwrap.
Cheap pallets to Holland long gone. We are still cheapest about £88 plus vat depends on postcodes.

There are quite a few "standard" pallet sizes. All are standard but a different size. Its made more complicated when height is brought into the equation, a 100cmx120cm pallet with a max height of 80cm is a quarter pallet, take it to 100cm height and it becomes a half pallet and 120cm its a full pallet. Then it all starts again on the next pallet size.

These height limits vary depending on pallet network.
We refuse to offer a quarter. Enough people rip us off as it is. If we offered a quarter EVERYTHING would suddenly become a quarter

Anyway our half height rate is usually cheaper than other people's quarters anyway.

Just picked up a 'standard' pallet. The gearbox is roughly 29 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches.
I had already drained it and washed it out with petrol several months ago. I now need to strip off the calipers and inboard discs plus other gubbins. The bellhousing is line bored with the box for the differential so I can't take that off. And for the rivet counters, it is a spiral bevel diff, rather than hypoid.

Toolstation next for some ratchet straps, Lidl for the cling film

Sometimes better to leave naked
If its a gearbox for example they can see what it is.
Pallets tend to get stacked on if they are nice and flat on top.
Wirh things like milling machines just wrap the motor to stop rain. If you wrap the whole machine driver can't see where to strap it down.
