Paintwork orange peel.

Hi folks, this is not my area so please help, Its years since i used to spray cars and it was only celly then.
Just had my Touarg repaired after somebody bumped it while parked, Anyway garage did a good job but the finish is slightly orange peel, the paint system is water based, Question is, will the orange peel be just in the lacquer, and should it polish out if I take it back?

Not a easy answer Gordon, really depends how bad the orange peel is and how thick the clear coat is. It usually is the clear coat that is the orange peel BTW. Did the factor finish have very slight orange peel in the first place? (sometimes they do) which may mean the body shop were trying to match it but went a bit too far. It is hard to say exactly how much they can machine polish the orange peel off (like I mentioned depends how bad and how thick the clear coat is)

Anyway if it didn't have even slight orange peel on the original factor finish do not accept it and tell them it needs to be the same even if they have to respray the area of the car again.

Thanks for the reply,Original paintwork was good, no noticeable orange peel,Very slight repair to tailgate and right hand back quarter, Only had very minor damage to correct, but it needed a whole new rear skirt/bumper to be replaced. maybe I'm being to critical,i will inspect it again an a few days after a couple of washes, see if that helps, Thanks again,, Gordon.

Depends how bad it is, but sometimes it doesn't take much to blend in new paint. I felt that I left too much orange peel on the Renault 5 when I painted it. Much annoyance. Just took a T-cut and polish and it looks fine now, I think the orange peel was partly just an effect of fresh paint which doesn't reflect so well as older paint.

They only put 2 coats of clear on these days in a lot of places so flat & polish might be a problem.

take it back if you are not happy and let them polish it, if they polish through its their problem

Not acceptable and as the snooper says if you paid the going price they asked then you'd expect a good finish.

There was a new landy discovery parked in the gunclub carpark a few weeks ago, i couldn't get over the amount of orange peel on it. A retired lad i was with who used to have his own bodyshop said it wouldn't have been acceptable when he was working at it, but it seems its ok from the factory now.

There was a new Rolls Royce Wraith Coupe parked in the pits at last years Silverstone Classic and I could see orange peel in the paint around the rear number plate.

Isn't orange peel to do with the incorrect pressure in the gun when spraying, sure I seen a program the other day that said this.

What color is the car? If it's a dark colour live with the orange peel as when the buff it i garuntee they will leave a horrid haze holographic finish!!!
