Painting Zamak/Mazak

Hello all,

From another forum, there is a chap with some 70's American muscle that needs to look at spraying some die cast body components (painted headlight surrounds that are starting to go manky -they are painted as standard too).

On this particular year they are made in Zamak (Pot metal?) - can anyone recommend a suitable primer/paint that would be happy on these? I'm assuming 2k may be off the table(I'm assuming it's a paint it in the shed job) , but if you know it's the right answer fire away!

acid etch primer is 2k but is verry thin and can be hand painted on 1st no problem

That was quick Brightspark! Can you recommend a brand, and then does more or less anything go over the top of it?

u can coat with any type of primer / most brands will be ok

id choose epoxy primer (sounding like a broken record now ) ...i did some cast headlamp covers once with etch and they festered , the customer came back and did them with epoxy with no further comebacks

Thanks both - Steve - I know it's probably me being a broken record now, what's your favoured epoxy primer? Do you topcoat straight over that too, or use the primer recommended for the colour coat first?

ive been using jotun , but i mostly do under body touch ups so the finish isnt highly important (its a boat primer )

id probably point you towards lechlar stuff , you can put some high build primer straight over the epoxy after an hour

It's Mazak actually, it has a skin and underneath us like an aero bar, best to epoxy prime then key and fill any pits with Upol fantastic filler then reprime then topcoat, this is how I do it and I use Lechlar
