Painting veener wood

I'm replacing a piece of rotten wood in a caravan. I've stuck veener wood onto plywood to make it look like the rest. It's now painted with ronseal varnish but the finish is awful. The veener feels rough and the varnish not very durable or sealing properly.
What's the best to paint it with for good protected finish. Varnish or lacquer and do they need to be polyurethane? Brushed or sprayed and do I need to remove the varnish that's on it first?

Was the veneer surface clean to start with, free of dust and oil contamination? The varnish has probably lifted the grain on the veneer. It'll need sanding down until it feels smooth, and then another coat of varnish applied.

It was brand new, it was just wiped down before varnish with a dry cloth.
What grit would you recommend for sanding it down and do I need to clean it with white spirit or anything.

120 or 180 grit sandpaper should be OK. You'll soon know if a coarser grade is required to start with.

If the ronseal was water based it will have raised the grain, even some solvent based ones raise the grain a bit.

As above, knock the roughness off with some sandpaper and recoat.

Ronseal is rubbish!

Sand, thern seal with a sanding sealer, sanding between coats. 3 coats should do.

As above. if its water based varnish it will raise the grain. It's also not a durable finish, it will chip off easily & not stand any wear.

Oil based is still the way to go for a good durable finish but good quality oil varnish is currently very expensive! A 2.5l tin used to be £30-£40, its now nearly £80!

Not bad, 1.3l of Rubio monocoat is about £110!!

We've used a similar 2 pack varnish at the Men's Shed. It was the same stuff as used by furniture factories. Superb stuff that leaves a glass like finish. We were quite annoyed when the 25l drum was used up & we couldn't get any more of it.
