How to prep ?
Primer ?
I want to use Holts car colours or straight to metal rattle cans I have loads of.

aerosol of plastic primer should do the trick

read the instructions carefully. plastic primer softens the plastic long enough to paint wet on wet. i would tend to follow your plastic primer with a std primer which you can then dry, flat/key and then top coat. Primer coat is not totally necessary but it will make for a better job.

key the plastic first. 600 wet or grey scothbrite9

then you will idealy need to look up if the rattle can primer is suited to HDPE , or if it doesnt say then hope for the best

some primers will be transparent . so straight on with the paint , others will be grey so you can put down a couple of coats then de nib it

I just want it to stick rather than a nice finnish.

You also want paint that will strech with the HDPE other wise it will crack. Its going to be a tough environment for paint. I'd be suprised if the paint lasts on the paddle more than a few outings.

So, Its gonna start out black, than as you get near the target the yellow will show though and you'll get spotted.

i would be surprised if the paint stayed on a paddle full stop no matter what is used, its gonna take some battering
