Painting OSB.

The inside of my new garage is going to be panelled in osb which I need to paint, how should I go about doing it? I asked on a painting and decorating forum but no replies. On a facebook thread I read suggested everything such as don't use waterbase as it causes delamination, pva first, use solvent paint, use waterbase, don't paint, use a sealer first.
My first thoughts were watered down emulsion to mist coat then a few coats of unwatered down emulsion but obviously don't want to mess up the wood.Floor I was going to use resincoat 2 part epoxy.
After getting the garage built cost is a consideration.

Why paint it. Its quite light and reflective anyway.

Its water proof and ok left outside for a few months, cant see a coat of emulsion doing it any harm.

I painted the inside of my shed with emulsion paint no mist coat just 3 coats of straight neat paint its still good now.

I liked the look of the OSB but it was too dark inside its no where near as light as now its painted white on the ceiling and really light blue on the walls just because thats what I had

I might leave it a while before painting and do agree that it looks good as bare wood, however it will be a working workshop and my previous experience of bare block walls is that it doesn't reflect light well, may be different with wood though.The people who spoke of delamination were american so they may have a different spec of osb.

I have used emulsion on both chipboard and osb with no ill effects. It is only a surface coating, you are not soaking the entire thickness with water. If in doubt try painting a small waste offcut and see what happens.

Same as 123hotchef, I painted mine with 3 coats of plain old white emulsion. The difference it makes to the light inside your shed will be phenomenal. I used Screwfix LED strip lights around the edge of the ceiling eventually, it's nice and bright inside.

Dutch barn style, chippy had never done this before apart from at college 20 years ago.Gives a surprisingly better storage space than normal apex roof, boxes can be stored almost to edge of roof space.

Felt shingles, keeps costs down and if needed I will replace will composite tiles in the future.

Colonial blue plastic cladding, was going to be anthracite but decided it might be too dark and overpowering from the house.

If you didn't want to paint it, you could try varnishing it - that will protect the board and give it a sheen, while keeping it natural.

Emulsion shouldn't cause any issues, but will soak in a lot and can end up looking patchy. I've had osb survive outside for several years before delaminating with just a coat of blackjack for protection.

Otherwise I've had reasonable success glossing it white. I'd go for dirt cheap gloss from somewhere like paintmaster, it doesn't need to be top end stuff as it would just be a waste of money.

I used what I would call 'standard' or 'traditional' OSB in a few projects many years ago and I don't recall any delamination issues when priming and painting with acrylic latex, although I can't speak for the experience of others. However, I would prefer to use an oil-based primer before painting.

There are different types and grades of OSB. I'm not sure what's available in the UK, but on one project here about ten years ago I installed AdvanTech roof sheathing (under the ice-and-water shield and shingle layers). AdvanTech sheathing has moisture-resistant laminating resin applied throughout the entire thickness of the panel. I think it's a good product. No issues so far.

I've had unpainted plywood walls and ceilings in my shop for several years, and I've had no problems at all, but it stays dry. As to painting it, I think that white (or maybe a very light gray) paint would increase the lighting efficiency in the shop, but I have enough LED strip lights to give me plenty of light anyway, so it hasn't been an issue, but who knows...maybe I'll get ambitious and paint it someday. I don't like gloss finishes on walls, as they produce harsh light reflections and also tend to make visual defects more obvious, but flat/matte surfaces are harder to clean, so a compromise would probably be a satin or 'eggshell' sheen.
