Painting my Land Rover

Hey Guys! Im doing a bit of work on my 1998 Defender 90, ive taken the rear tub off so I can weld and paint the chassis properly. I need to repair some paint work but I cant get a good colour match because the paint is faded and will look patchy if I do that. So I was thinking about a re-spray but looking at other threads some people seem to paint while the body and engine are still in place! how do you paint the bulkhead if there still in place?

Also do I just need to key the surface and paint over or will I need a primer first?

Im not sure what my 90 was originally painted with? base/clear or 2k?

will that effect what kind of paint I will be able to use?

Most people I know just paint the bits of the bulkhead you can get at as the only way to paint the entire bulkhead properly is to remove it and strip it down.

Best bet is the spray what you can and brush the unseen bits behind the engine wings.

If the paint isn't metalic it will probably just be 2k, yes you can scotchbrite the existing paint and paint over, you only need to prime exposed bare metal.

A good paint place can mix a match to the faded paint if you want so it doesn't stand out.
I have hand painted a few 4x4s with good results

thanks for the info winchman! truth be told a have never really liked the colour of my landy, its routland red or something like that; a dull washed out red. Going to keep it red but go for a red with metallic. I'll have a look at that paint place.


What make and type of paint would you recommend?

if youre new to painting then id suggest you stay with a non metalic colour

2 pack products are best if you can spray somewhere away from the public and use a suitable mask

Tekaloid give a very high gloss finish and can be brushed or rollered on

Its what coach and buses are painted with.
I feel the metallic is a more skilled job to get right I would only spray it if you have a place to do it with the correct breathing equipment

Heres one me and the kids did, paint including brushes and roller was about £40it was a few years ago so I feel about £60 now.
Rubbed it down with a pan scrubber, primed it, painted it Nato green then added the black

Rambo did you use enamel?

Can enamel be buffed or clear coated? im looking for a high shine.

Enamel is not meant to be buffed or clear coated. It also tends to react if you paint over it at a later date.

is it a limited budget or pay whatever to be "right"

I was thinking base / upol 1k clear or 2k clear! I don't want a show car but would like a nice finish! I don't go off road so wont get scratch except for parking and footballs. Im going to be using a earlex 5500 sprayer with a 1.8/1.6 needle! never used it for cars but used it for spraying some metal work at work and it did a really good job!
I thought base/clear as im going to mop it so if I made a mistake a could sort it!

cheers, oh and I was expecting to pay around £200 for paint.

well heres my thoughts

1k clear doesnt last well , it yellows and cracks , its not really meant for resprays more
suited to a bumper corner on a sales car

2k clear/direct gloss - yeah great , good stuff very durable but you will need a air fed mask idealy

sinse youre new to it i would look for solid direct gloss paint , so one less thing to worry about

theres also rustoleum combi paint which is very popular with the diy crowd - i think this might suit you best really for a low budget diy job

all of the above can be reworked if you make a mistake and also polish up with a buffer

I used 1k synthectic from my local paint supplier.

You could spray the whole landy with a clearcoat after you have painted it, or, gloss wood varnish.

If you put clearcoat over synthetic you are asking for problems!

synthetic is okay if youre good at painting with it, theres not much scope for reworking /polishing if it goes wrong

This is where I get confused! what is synthetic paint? That's not base the same stuff I get when ordering base? Got I guy at work who says he will paint my 90 for £15 an hour! I thought that's sounds good as i'll be doing the prep and can just take panels to him.

synthetic is a low cost paint usualy meant for stuff like skips , farm yard equipment and cheap n chearfull vehicles that you arent too fussy about like an old van etc

like i say you spray it on and thats what you get , any runs or orange peel and it stays like it

if you can get someone else to paint it then id order up some ebay 2pack direct gloss , should give a lasting finish and can be polished and repainted without problems

Hey guys! just did a little test on a colour i like, it was mixed into a spray can and i used upol 1k clear as a test (i'll be using 2k clear when i do it for real) its Firenze red metalic, i havent cut and buffed it to see what it will be like on car but i like it! thanks for the advice!!
