painting melamine??

have any of you guys done this?
to your kitchen cupboards sides etc.
plenty of info on the net but I would like to know from the horse's mouth so to speak.
is it durable some say it is.
this stuff suppose to be good Owatrol E.S.P.
we have solid oak doors on ours.
had look at some new units and we like the grey painted affect.
so I thought I'll paint ours with rollers.
cheaper paying a couple of grand on new units.

dont see a problem , usual precautions surface cleanliness, etc. If the doors are real wood you may still get a fleck effect from the grain and not a true smooth finish -say like a car bodywork. The ESP is a primer I think, and not the final finish, ideal for existing smooth finishes.
Any " iron on edging strips" on the carcase might react.
I`ve always used Syntema products for this type of refinish.-sprayed

Have a look at annie sloan chalk paint it goes on just about anything its not cheap but it works.

thanks but as for the cupboard doors etc we want the wood grain showing so that is not the problem.

its the melamine info is what I want to know.
and if any of you guys had luck putting it on that is what I was asking.
theres plenty info like I said,just want to hear if you guys have tried thats all. thanks anyway.

I think my friend did her units with melamine paint using a small foam roller. It did last a couple of years until they could afford to change the kitchen, but I think it scratched quite easily iirc.

rough the surface up to give a good key for the paint and it shouldnt

I tarted up some chipboard bedroom furniture a few years ago, paint still stuck well now, bar a few tiny chips on vulnerable corners.
I Used Zinser 1-2-3 with a couple of coats of exterior quick drying paint (exerior, because that was the only option the colour came in).
All done with sponge rollers. Came out okay.

thanks for the replies.
upon a closer look one or two cupboards are beginning to swell up ,probably due to dampness creeping in(steam).
so I will replace some sides that are visible.
the cupboard doors are made of oak.so we thought we'll try and paint them like the grey ones we looked at in the show rooms using a brush and roller.
and walla they turned out quite nice. with the grain showing fetch it off nicely too.
doing it this way has saved us quite a bit of money.

I did some tests on a melamine board using rattle tins. Abraded and non-abraded surface, primed and no-primed with a top coat on each.

The results were acceptable, both ways. I did not do any chipping or scratching to test the grip, it did not just fall off.
