Painting Garden Furniture

I’m going to paint some metal garden furniture for a relative but I’m not sure what paint is best to use. The furniture is mock wrought iron ( presumably actually steel), the existing green finish looks like powder coating and it’s in good condition, just a bit faded. The surface is quite rough, like a sandblasted effect. I need to change the colour to black as well, I think satin or gloss would look fine.

I actually thought about using Raptor and spaying it straight on, would this work? Or black epoxy brush applied? Or am I overthinking it and plain old metal paint from the shop will suffice? I don’t want to be doing it again in two years time though!

I used some 'plain old metal paint' on my front gates and it's lasted pretty well - 10 years on and it's now time for a re-paint - but perhaps I'm not the fussiest of individuals. I've always favoured a satin finish over gloss, on steel.

so youve taken the powder coat off or going over it?

I roped my daughter and her friend into painting my old, fit for the bin, galvanised B&Q wheelbarrow. Painted the tub inside with Lidl's black metal paint. Impressed tbh.

Powder coat - biggest con out. You can paint over it with practically anything. I did a set of corroded alloy furniture for my neighbour - sandblasted, etch primed, 2 pack primer and finish coat - outside in the garden.
The guy doing the blasting said it could have been double the price if the original finish was powered coat.

I think satin will look better, especially with the existing surface being quite rough.

Sorry I should have said; I’m hoping for minimal prep. A quick sand and degrease really, otherwise it will get to the point where I tell them it’s not worth the hassle….
