The governor has me wondering. We have a landrover bulkhead in galv. Need to raptor it. Boss read raptor needs a wash primer under epoxy?? Really? Anybody have an experience/opinion on the wash?

Not to my knowledge, unless it is fresh galvanising? It doesn't adhere so well apparently, but older and dull galvanising should take the epoxy directly.

I wonder if it's akin to hammerite saying you have to use hammerite thinner etc. It's just another product to give the ironically opposite effect. Or is it belt and braces. I'm sure open coat 80grit would suffice.

Interesting that Lechler make no distinction, which suggests that Mordant is now the way of etch primers.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
Black steel sheet: microsand or sand.
Steel sheet: degrease carefully with 00695 SILICONE REMOVER SLOW and sand or sandblast.
Aluminium and light alloys: clean and degrease with 00695 SILICONE REMOVER SLOW. Sandblast or
sand carefully.
Electro galvanised steel: degrease carefully with 00695 SILICONE REMOVER SLOW.
Hot dip galvanised steel: degrease with 00695 SILICONE REMOVER SLOW and sand or rub down.
Fibreglass: Degrease with 00695 SILICONE REMOVER SLOW. Sand if necessary.

I'm, as ever obliged fellas. I don't profess to be expert on all substrates and galv in my mind doesn't need to be overcoated so not come across this application. I did however try to weld some once.

I used this on a fresh "tin" roof paint job a few years ago, still going strong. I make no apologies for plugging HMG, a truly great British company. Jeze! I took a look to see if Rawlins stock the stuff, £46 for 5L, no way I paid anything like that much.

I’ve always prepared with T wash (mordant), never peeled off,then overcoat with regular paint.
I’ve never succeeded with weathering first. It just scrapes off.

Well epoxy primer is superior to most if not all of the traditional "witches' brews". Here is an example on a difficult substrate; shiny and unprepared plastic with epoxy primer. You can see that despite being severely creased, there is no loss of adhesion, nor cracking. Lechler 29107.

It does indeed stick well to those beakers. You can't peel it off.
