painting a tractor.

i bought a spray gun and no absolutly nothing about spraying, i want to be able to spray tractors and get them looking decent, is this hard achieved for a novice? im confused as to what to do. once the panel is keyed, is it the bare metal that is etched primed and paintwork that is normal primed? also not sure what kind of paint to use? tractol is it ? also what kind of paper do you use to key primer? and should i laquer the paint job. thanks

Hi Oilcooled,

I think if it were me I'd go down the Synthetic paint, or coach paint as it's sometimes known, you get a pretty good finish straight from the gun, the only downside is it takes longer to go hard than others, and you can't flat and polish it (unless you want to wait 6 months) Trucks used to be painted with it, either by thinning it or (my prefered method) Hot spray, where the paint is warmed up which in turn thins it.

As for ease of using it, it does take a bit of practice to spray it without it running everywhere, but it's relatively cheap.

As for you prep, sand it down etch any bare metal bits, normal primer on any filler work or rough areas of paint, then paint. (if using synthetic, you can also give it an undercoat).

i think tractol is synthetic, it prop requires laquering to stop in fading ?

I've not used tractol, but I guess it must be synthetic.

Tecaloid was another name for coach paint any industrial paint should do look for quick drying
try farm supplies in your area also there is a bit on painting on the forum tutorials top of any page click on paint

I've been thinking about their vehicle paint for my van,being polyurethane it must be quite tough stuff,but i'm not sure about the thinners,is No2 thinner same as white sprirt?
I'm not connected with them btw

im looking for an not a showroom job .. . a middle of the road job, be painting prob something like a ford 7840 or a 10 series or a fiat 110-90 along them lines, want it to look respectable, note the tractor is for work not shows
does laquer not prevent fading ? :/

Teal and Mackrill (Teamac) do a range or agricultural paints in tractor colours.
Thats what our local agri merchant stocks.

most of the paints mentioned are synthetic , you wouldnt laquer over them

theyre kinda cheap n cheerfull , as you cant rework it very well if you get runs or a bad finish

this is the paint gun i bought the fella in the engineer shop said it was there best gun for machinery, looks of good quality anyway. 1.8 mm needle

use 2k its very hard wearing compared to the other cheap stuff
synthetic is terrible stuff its a one shot paint and what you see after spraying is what you have to put up with also as mentioned earlier it takes forever to properly cure .
i doubt very much the original paint was synthetic

2k is the only way to go, it wont be much dearer if anything at all

most agricultural supply shops will have a shelf with gallons of synth (vapourmatic, tractol temac etc) in the usual tractor colours-get the same thinners at the same time for cleaning as much as anything.

As its a piece of agricultural machinery that stuff does the job admirably.

Hot spray as if you thin it it has a horrible bloom to it and just runs everywhere.

practice a bit as the paint lands and looks orange peel but after a few seconds the individual blobs of paint flow or wet and you get a good gloss

seems pretty tough stuff considering the abuse the original stuff gets.

thing is , the average non pro sprayer working at home probably wont get the prep good enough to see any benefits

rustloem combi is worth a thought , it tends not to fester up over old random paint jobs and can be flated /re painted /polished unlike synthetics
