I bought a small Boxford lathe recently and whilst in pieces I'd thought I'd spruce her up a bit with a lick of paint. On a recommendation I bought some Tractol primer and gloss enamel both Alkyd based.
I thought being enamel I could get a reasonable brush finish as I'm fairly good painter but this paint goes off so fast there is no way you can over brush once on and despite using a few combinations of thinning I'm getting no where fast and it looks like spraying is the way to go.
The spec sheet says it can be both air and airless sprayed and whilst I have a compressor, used mainly for waxoyling the car and blowing up the tyres not much else.
So, the question is should I get an airless spray gun OR a cheapish air spray gun which will work with my compressor. Compressor is a cobbled together single cylinder with a small tank (old fire extinguisher) fitted with a cheap water trap and pressure regulator.
In the future I won't be spraying cars or anything too large just small projects like the lathe.
Any advice and recommendations gratefully received.
