Paint stripper

Has anyone got experience of chemically stripping old 1970's paint from a car shell ?

I have got some industrial strength stuff from a mate, who used it to strip varnish off his stair case in a flash !! It WON'T touch it ?

I then bought some Starchem stripper (supposed to be VERY good) £30 spent - It WON'T touch it !!!

Any ideas folks ?

Have you tried breaking the surface with a Scotchpad?

Is it original paint, sometimes we re painted with enamel which can be a $%^& to remove.

Interesting. I've noticed that when blasting scooter panels in some cases the outside surfaces were much harder to blast than the inside ones. I put this down to thicker paint and years of polishing providing a tougher surface.

Yes, it's original paintwork. I'll try scratching the surface, see if that makes a difference.

Funny that highly toxic chemical stripper won't go near it, yet show a 70's car a bit of water and it starts to disintegrate right in front of your eyes !!!

Its also not helpful that its very cold right now which may be slowing things down, if you have a way of safely warming the chemical and the substrate a bit it may help.

If you're using a Methylene Chloride based stripper I wouldn't warm it, it's very volatile and would evaporate before it has time to work.

Scratch up surface paint on stripper then cover in an old wet cloth Wrung out not dripping or old newspaper DO NOT let it dry or you will be wondering if a wallpaper striper will help
Some people cover in cling film have not tried this
Misodern strippers appears to be wossy stuff

agreed that cold weather wont help things

covering it with polythene or cling film works by stopping the solvent flashing off so quickly.

Try Methylene Chloride gel covered with cling film, pallet wrap or similar. Scour the surface, apply heavily then cover with the cling film. Leave for up to a couple of days.
