Paint Stripper For Ali

Decided to remove and repaint a couple of coach lanterns as the majority of the "paint" is flaking off. Well...the jet wash took a lot off but the rest it stuck fast!

Tried the wire cup brush in the grinder not good. Next the velcro discs in the drill. Not bad but what a slow ballache!

The 5L of Synstryp I had here had gone old and crusty.

Anything I can use from "the kitchen"? Got some washing soda crystals here.

Not sure about "from the kitchen" but maybe from Wickes? They do a Paint and Varnish stripper that I've used quite a lot. It's based on benzyl alcohol, perhaps with an alkaline additive, and comes as a sort of gel. I think that the same sort of stuff is used in the aviation industry as it is gentle on aluminium.

As always, may be best to do a test on an inconspicuous area first.

I succumbed and got some from Screwfix after both Wickes and Toolstation not having any.

I'd have gone to Wilko but find myself factoring the petrol cost in now.

Weird stuff, the "paint". Appears to have no primer and peelss off almost like rubber once unadhered. Powder coated maybe?

Sod's law the inside paint started peeling so I've to strip that too now.

It's come to something when the refurb costs for two B&Q / Screwfix lanterns probably exceed the cost new! Still, not wanting to contribute to the throw away society etc.

Providing that you are not including your time in the costs, I think the fact that you are doing a pair of lamps will probably keep the job economically viable. And... there is something very pleasing about restoring stuff. It's not as good as eating ice cream with some apple pie, but it has no bad effects on your teeth, so that's good .

god that stuffs garbage i got some on my hands and face and never noticed. just sauntered over to the tap and washed it off got some industrial stuff on me and was at the tap quicker than linford chrisie spitting on it on the way

Doesn’t take long for the industrial stuff to get a bit warm on the skin does it! Nitromors used to be like that, now it’s rubbish.

It might be powder coated. The corrosion creeps under powder coating rather than bursting through like it does on normal paint..

Yet another reason to avoid powder coating.

I think the folks who do powder coating on wheels use concentrated sulfuric acid warmed up to some suitable temperature to get the old stuff off, and I'll definitely pass on that one.

I normally just wrap items in old t-shirts bits and add thinners then pop it in a plastic bag and seal.it, down side is it takes time but i do it in between other jobs.

I love knowing where old sayings come from. "Couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding", I reckon this stuff gave rise to that old adage and may in fact be rice pudding!

I've lost count but I'm on application 4 or 5. On some stubborn bits I've even resorted to my Leatherman blade to scrape them off.

Something else to factor in is the petrol for the mower. I'm going to need to cut the grass and "mulch" all the stuff that I've jet washed off before SWMBO sees it.

However, we're getting there. Another half dozen applications of this crap along with yet to be decided mechanical means should see these ready for primer:

Thank goodness I’m not alone. I got the planer/thicknesses out to do the scaffold boards for my new bench and couldn’t run 12ft in the shed and the chips blew everywhere. I was out there hoovering the grass for ages. Got a few smart ar$ed remarks but I said I’d sprinkled it with Whisky so it comes up half cut and just needs a quick vacuum.

I suspect that they must be powder-coated and I don't know of any brush-on material which will lift powder coating. I own a small steel trailer which was powder coated at the factory; in some places the coating is good as new, but just a few millimetres away, you can peel it off and find rust underneath. Only thing I've found that gets any of it off is my angry grinder. If you take flakes of the coating and immerse them in solvents (acetone, MEK, xylene) nothing happens to them. Don't have any DCM to try out.

Finally in etch primer! Got them back to bare eventually with the aid of a stainless wool ball:

There was one speck I missed that showed through the primer. Sliced off with the tip of a knife and I'll get away with it.

Half a can of dark grey U-POL
inside and out then went over just the outside with the lighter Autotek. Happy enough from rattle cans:

The only black I've got is these two satin. A full can I think of the Rustoleum and maybe half in the Simoniz. I'll get that on tomorrow:

I'm doing much the same as you today, but not on lamps, but a set of "winter wheels". These are alloys with winter tyres on them and they were looking a bit scruffy, but not so bad I wanted to have them recoated. I'm pushing on fairly quickly with them and they won't score 10/10, but they will do for the winter.
