Paint removal and Painting Preparation

Hi;

I have just bought an Erbauer 150mm DA Sander, it came with some discounted Flexovit 80 Grit discs.

I have just used it on the roof of my Mini and whilst it os removing some of the paint the disc is getting clogged, checking the box 80 - 100 grit is for leveling and smoothing probably not course enough.

I was not planning on taking the paint down to bare metal apart from in a few areas where Red Lead has been used as a primer, the rest of the paint will be partial removed (mix of top coat and primer coat).

What discs should I get for:
a. Paint removal, where needed.
b. Flatting down original paint / primer.


(Boy sanding the roof is loud - so loud my neighbour has just phoned the council :-(

i wouldnt go any coarser than 80 for removal , 180 for prep will give a good key for your primer

What make of discs? Are the Flexovit any good. My outlets are Screwfix and most DIY stores, couple of Auto shops?

ive not used those ...you tend to get what you pay for so the dearer ones work alot better and last longer

i tend to use 3m abrasives

Flexovit are as good as any but you would be better off using clean and strip poly discs on an angle grinder to remove paint from where you want bare metal

yeah good point those clean and strip wheels work very well

I guess you mean these I have been using them for exact;y that purpose, just used them instead of the DA to get down to metal where needed.

Those Flexovit discs are not suitable for paint, I've found any burgundy colour discs clog on paint. Norton used to do some white ones that were good but Screwfix stopped selling them. Now I use Sia ones off ebay, yellow colour. More expensive but that's just you get what you pay for.

I would agree with Ritchie, I would use Mirka gold discs, they may seem dearer but will last much longer.
You get what you pay for !!!

Screwfix sell Norton discs but the reviews aren't good, don't stick.
