Paint finish on new cars.

Parked up next to a 19 plate Merc whilst Mrs. GT went for some retail therapy.

Couldn’t help noticing the poor paint finish on it (and this was the whole car)



I realise that it could have been repainted….



Either way, if it was my car and I was picking it up from the dealership / paint shop, I really would have struggled to accept it.

Or are my expectations just too high, even on a premium brand such as Mercedes?

Im afraid that is pretty standard now with the new water based paints. They are also often very thinly applied so not enough meat to correct with cutting and polishing.

Its always been like that. I remember back in 1989 when I first started in the motortrade a painter told me it wasn't about getting a good finish it was about getting as bad a finish that the manufacturer got.

I was in my mate's garage a while ago and he had a relatively new Merc in there, white paintwork, and a bloody great patch of rust on one of the body panels. I'll stick with Mr Honda and Mr Toyota.

missus got a brand new golf a few years back as a company car. pretty bad orange peel from the factory
